I respect the hell out of you my guy, but I 100% disagree with you on this guys dismissal. He wasn’t a child who made an oopsie daisy. This was a full grown adult with a lot of experience who made a greedy, yet highlight calculated, gamble and lost. I’m not going to host a party for his demise, but he 100% dug his own grave and deserves everything that comes at this point, just like he would have gotten insanely rich if he succeeded. There’s no sympathy here.
I also wouldnt consider meeting him at an event on a panel (that’s how it looked) a good way to measure his character. Everyone wears a mask in public, especially for business. Hang out with him behind closed doors with no cameras, audience, or connection as a big promoter/seller of his product, and you’ll probably see a very different side to him.
Finally, I don’t fault you continuing to use Unity, you’ve mastered the software completely and that is to be highly respected. That said, buddy getting the boot and a large severance is far from a reason to open up to them again. It MIGHT just be a ploy where he’s become the large lump of bad PR that they’re cutting off in hopes to gain back trust just so they can feel like they’re in the clear and can try again later with a sneakier approach and maybe not get caught next time, or maybe every bad decision Unity made really was because of one single person and definitely not a board room of experts, and cutting him really will cleanse the company of all manners of evil greed…maybe.
Nah, I’m good. I loved Unity for years like everyone else, I’m nothing special. But I don’t think anyone is buying this as a redemption. It’s just the best apology that can be afforded by a company that’s only sorry they got caught. The only one whose gonna buy them a drink and sympathize with them is Wizards of The Coast. Just ask the DnD community who went through, almost, the exact same thing.

I worked for an Activision studio for years. I met Bobby Kotick once, he showed up at the studio, made a little all hands meeting, spoke about stuff, he was a pleasant person to be around. He was polite and nice to talk to. Based on only that, I would say he's a nice guy. But that's just PR, that's just the front. Bobby Kotick is a pos, because of his actual actions.
And I'm convinced John Ricitello is as well, having a nice chat with him doesn't tell much. It's not like he'll have a chat with you and just be an a-hole just for the fun of it.

I was not calling for this because as an adult who's seen how humans work for too long, the Unity decision was not one that a CEO forced on the rest of the company, that decision was made with mutual consent of the board, so unless the BOARD steps down and we get an entirely new top-down corporate culture which has a higher level of respect for customers, there's no point. This is just symbolic, it changes nothing, and if anything it lowers my trust, because it's the equivelent of a YouTuber dropping an apology video where they don't actually apologize for anything. This entire thing is just a silly dance to convince stupid people who think a single suit being "punished" aka likely get a better job offer and leave with golden parachute severence, and I think gamedevs are unfortunately for them smarter than average customers who don't fall for kid tricks like "we fired that guy you didn't like." You seem stuck in Unity while trying to convince yourself it's going to be okay so you don't have to eat the pain of transitioning, and that's sad. You should just see the company for what it is and after you wrap up the games you need to wrap up, you really should just move on, the writing on the wall could not be more obvious and you're playing it like an ostrich.

Interesting point about Unity seeing Godot as a bigger competitor than Unreal. Which makes sense, though. Unity developers who are focused on more sophisticated genres such as RPGs, open world adventure games, etc, who would defect to Unreal would have a higher learning curve to get up to speed there, whereas Unity developers who are focused on simpler genres such as puzzle games or basic platformers could probably ramp up with Godot fairly easily, so Godot can probably grab defectors more quickly and readily than Unreal could.

I was literally just about to start our game in Unity when this all happened. We’ve been pounding Godot tutorials and experimenting with the engine. Have to say we are pretty excited about using it. Super intuitive and has all we need for our current game. Was an easy decision for us, but I feel for those who are deep invested in Unity right now. Tough to just start all over again. Thanks Thomas.

1:07 He's not a nice guy. He's a charming guy. There is a difference.
