I'm 40 and am trying to switch from finance to video games. I definitely have people who think I'm crazy and I know I'm not the only one out there going through this stuff. I can definitely relate to not caring what others think, which is much harder said than done. If I did, I think I'd have to give up my dream. Thanks Thomas your videos have definitely led to me taking this chance.

Personally, when I'm doing a project, I always run into the same question: Will it be worth reaching my goal? Most of the times it feels like and endless path, which leads me to abandon those projects. And, the worst part, is when I realize the reason behind this is my lack of consistency and it turns everything into mental pain.

I've been trying to make a game for 4 years now. 4 Years... And that's after 15 years of coding and 10 years of software dev career. I've been failing and failing and failing. Quitting, failing, dropping projects, changing engines, changing tactics. My journey has taken me to a small game dev company, where I was earning 10x less then I was making as a software dev. The culture there was depressing and I wasn't treated very well. But... I met a friend there, he's an artist. And now we're making a game that I know that we'll finish. Now I know... I wasn't failing, I wasn't quitting, I was searching.

I think many people with niche interests are often surprised by how many people also like those same niche things. That's how I felt about my love for music in obscure languages and those languages themselves. To me it's wild and fascinating (like for real have you SEEN those northwest caucasian languages??? They have like 2-3 times as many consonant sounds as english and only like two vowels, could you imagine having to speak that???), but I perceived that others didn't feel the same way. Then I starred in a youtube video about foreign languages and went viral and got millions of views. I made a playlist of songs in 700 languages which has nearly 9,000 followers on spotify. I was so surprised that people actually cared, and I never would've known if I hadn't been so open about it. Made me feel very connected to the human race to see that commonality.

There is no one who is better at communicating something than a person who has really passion in it. It is sad, both for those who decide to give up expressing themselves, and for those who would have the opportunity to see such passions, because they don't have the possibility to see that thing through passionate eyes. Show us what you like, Thomas, we are eager to see and play it!

I feel the same way with my interests! I am 19 and my favourite music genre is jazz, I am into weird fantasy worlds where goblin houses are modelled after takeout boxes, I am deeply invested in indie games and supporting indie creators (seeing as I am developing a game), and I quite literally have a blacksmithing forge in my backyard. My friends don't care about most of that stuff! Using these interests to fuel my passions for game design has been incredibly useful, and its been a great way to step aside from the fact that most people don't care about these things at the time I live in, but I have always thought that if I can combine them in the right way, it will create a masterpiece.

I gotta say that I was starting to fall away from your channel there for a bit... this has given me a much needed breath of fresh air! Way to go! I'm 50 (this year) and have been doing a LOT of introspection, and this was right on the nose! I have a ton more to say about it, but I don't want to bore anyone. Keep that passion!

You know, I'm not really into any of those things you said you were into, but I'm thrilled to hear that you're going to be leaning into those interests. You're right, it's intoxicating when someone decides to go all out on their passions. And even though those aren't my interests, I'm fascinated to see what you produce by following your interests.

Appreciate this video! One thing i've found in letting people influence your work too much, is you can end up where you never really wanted to be; then lose motivation because it's not what you're passionate about. Thanks for this!

I have never felt so similar to how I have been feeling then this video. I felt like most of my life I let other people make decisions for me and now I'm actually pursuing what I want and I feel like those closest to me don't have any interest in the things I am interested in and I loose peoples attention when talking to them about my interests. Nice to hear someone share their thoughts on the same things. Thanks Thomas!
