I never understood the phrase "kill your darlings" until I got into gamedev. This principal applies to almost anything you create in life and is a very important and valuable skill to have I think! "KISS your darlings goodbye" is my motto. Game jams can really help you hone these 2 skills

This isn't really 'How to avoid development hell', it's 'How to avoid feature creep and prioritize'. Projects worth finishing take a lot of time and effort, there's going to be a shitty grind to get it done. There is no outsmarting it, only pushing through or giving up.

I like feature creeping :) Thats why i stopped making a "game" and instead doing lot of prototyping (many many features ...). I realized that i am having more fun this way. But I should also mention that publishing a game is not my primary aim.

The trinity hook is a great concept. Personally, I don’t think there’s a most important aspect to it, but I have noticed there’s a certain order that I (and a lot of other people) observe these features when we think about buying a game. First, I tend to look at art - it’s generally what catches your audience’s interest first, due to aesthetic appeal or a unique style (Cuphead, etc.). Then, it’s usually the story, or what you can observe of it from a description or trailer. Try to think of a sentence that encapsulates the basic idea of the story - something unique yet simple, maybe juxtaposition, to get your audience thinking. A character quote can work quite well, but only if it gives an accurate summation of the game’s premise - maybe from an opening sequence. Originality is key! Gameplay is the last, and what they’ll look at when making the final decision. Unique gameplay mechanics are great, but make sure they appear easy to understand and somewhat self-explanatory, despite how interesting they might be. Of course I haven’t released any games (yet) but this is just what I’ve noticed from being a consumer of these products. Obviously not everyone’s gonna observe your game in this order, but it’s what I found a lot of people do, even subconsciously. Hope this helped!

Minimalism is an ultimate necessity when it comes to the tremendous complexity of game development.

The real way to make money in game dev is to "teach" others how to be a game dev

Thomas Brush once again dropping the gems. The Trinity hook is one of the most single genius things I’ve ever heard.

Feature creep is real in any software project. Saw it a few times during employment as a web dev. Great insight and video thanks.

I love the idea of the Trinity Hook, and you touched on this, but I truly believe that you really only need one of the three to get noticed and gain fans. So many popular games are known mainly as 1) a stunning work of art, or 2) having an incredible story and world, or 3) offering something in gameplay that is completely fun and novice.

i have a problem with the idea of simplifying because i want everything to be perfect and because i want that i constantly catch myself over complicating everything i do or code.. 😭

Great video which Feature creep can be good it has upgraded my games time and time again... But so have listening to what my community and fellow devs think of the game to guide me as I make an impossible every TT game. among my many other game and other projects.

Thanks Needed to watch this my game finished perfect core loop then feature creep started to kick in

So yeah I really messed up with the thing called "simplify"... My game core itself is already complicated... I'm basically got inspirations from hollow knight in the story and character making itself, so I made too much designs... and changed it too much... to the point where I really don't have any thing really done in a 6 months span...

Contantly making tools to fix problems that can just be worked around, or for me my code works, but its not pretty so I start over. very helpful sometimes we devs just need a reminder.
