I've lived outside of NZ for almost 20yrs - USA, UK & Germany (still in the DE). This has helped me to have a wider perspective on the positives & negatives of my home country. To all commentors who describe NZ as beauty on steroids, unnervingly quiet, boring, peaceful, psychotic driving Land, horribly cold, 4 seasons in 1 day inconsistent weather, friendly people, dull news, too many sheep etc etc - you're all correct, it is all that. And I appreciate the honesty and gentle critique. But there is one comment I can't stand: when people say NZ has no culture. This is incorrect, it has two -- that being the Māori culture & kiwiana, the hybrid kiwi culture of today. They're newborn babies compared to most world cultures but the people are trying their best to show off these newborns to all and tell em aaaalll about the little things that make these babies rock. 😊 Culture in NZ is not so much within the walls of ancient rocks and buildings, or art or music even, but in the people . And it is the people who you should be open to. So practice opening your heart in NZ. I can assure you, kiwis love opening their hearts to others. In fact, you'll never make it through a checkout counter without first being prompted to give a rundown of your life story here lol. And maybe say yes when a kiwi stranger invites you to a hangi or a dinner at their place or a visit to a marae etc. That said, don't be silly, use your instinct and common sense when accepting invites as there are idiots and dodgy people in every country. 😉 I'm proud that as a kiwi, Karl adores India and shows respect to the people and culture etc as that's a beloved kiwi custom we all try to practice. To show kindness and friendliness to all humans, stranger and friend. Honestly, it's 50% because we like to be nice and 50% fear because if you don't, in time, somehow, mum is going to find out that you were rude to a friend of a friend of a friend's visiting 3rd cousin, and you're going to get a slap behind the head, a tongue lashing or a jandal flung at you when next you visit. 😉☺️ He aha te mea nui?
