I feel like there’s been so many bullshit apologies where the only purpose is damage control. It’s hard to watch an apology and not feel like it’s aimed at you and needs to be judged on the merits of how well it appeases your audience. As a white, masc person, my gut reaction to iDubbbz' apology was similar to Charlie's. I thought it was performative to apologise for past fuckups when you've already demonstrated with your subsequent actions that you've bettered yourself and seen the error of your ways.
It wasn't until I read reactions to the video from POC saying that they were waiting for this acknowledgement and explicit apology that I realised I just couldn't understand what it was like to be legitimately hurt by those videos. I can't put myself in their shoes and know their experiences, so it's not for me to say what's performative and what's the right thing to do.
