This isn't an interview or debate, it's an unqualified person trying to demean an expert who is trying to explain something they can't and won't understand.

The audacity of a daytime TV host suggesting that people shouldn't be given money for no work, as if sitting infront of a camera and interrupting people is actually a real a worthwhile job

God if I was given £1,600 a month on top of my salary would I work? Fucking right I'd work! I'd be able to triple my mortgage payment with money left over and pay the damn thing off within a decade, then I'd quit my job and record music for the rest of my life, maybe even open a studio.

That introduction says so much about our media. "Here to talk about this, we've got a man who's entire job is focused around researching and learning about the strengths and weaknesses of this concept, and someone who was on the Apprentice once."

As someone who lives in the most impoverished province in Canada the idea that the rich can siphon wealth from us but we can't do even a fraction of the same without it being politicized makes me want to go molotov on people. It makes me go absolutely mental knowing how people around me are living on less than paycheck to paycheck.

This whole “poor people are lazy scroungers” narrative is so frustrating. I worked as an EAL (English as an additional language) teacher at a secondary school in the U.K. for 6 years, & made barely above minimum wage as my job was classed as “learning support”, despite us having a similar workload to fully qualified teachers. I’m neurodivergent (dyslexic, dyspraxic, autistic, & ADHD), so when people would say to me “just find a better job!” I’d explain to them that I was trying to find a better job. I applied for literally hundreds of jobs during those 6 years, & each application took me days to complete, so I’d sometimes miss deadlines. Of those 6 years & hundreds of applications, I got 3 interviews. The third interview (in 2020) was the only one that led to a job offer. Then I caught covid during my probation period, & made myself even more ill by continuing to work remotely instead of resting, as I was terrified of failing my probation & losing my job. I ended up being let go at the end of my probation period anyway. I then signed on for universal credit, & my work coach noticed how unwell I seemed all the time, & suggested I get signed off by my GP. I was eventually diagnosed with ME/chronic fatigue syndrome (I also have other health issues that I don’t want to disclose here) & was declared to be at Limited Capability for Work Related Activity following a mandatory health & disability assessment. Since then, I’ve registered as self employed because a school wanted to book me to facilitate a two-day workshop, & of course I wanted to do everything legitimately & declare my earnings. I haven’t received much freelance work since, either due to not being able to find it, or for being too unwell to accept gigs. When I do freelance work, for every £1 I make, the government deducts 55p from my benefits. There’s also the risk that if I take on a certain amount of freelance work, they might decide that I must be well enough to work full time, when in reality I never know how well I’m going to feel from one day to the next. People like me aren’t lazy. We want to work, but the system makes it difficult for us.

IMO, what many of those who oppose UBI and UBS don't understand is that humans WANT to work! Humans generally enjoy doing things! It's just that the current circumstances are so difficult for the working class, and people become so burnt out, that it's made productivity much less enjoyable. How can productivity be fulfilling when, despite working 40 hours a week, you're still struggling to afford the necessities?

I love the outrage at the idea of doing an experiment like this, on something that in their mind will crash and burn, because it will show how viable UBI is.

UBI also allows careers and options that have been hamstrung by being unstable in income (most of the arts like music, art and writing) to be much more viable.

Why do they even have experts on if they just want to rattle off absurd questions too quickly to answer? This is the guy, of course he has well thought out positions on things, you can't say he's wrong until you actually know what he's saying.

If you think ppl on UBI will obviously stay in bed all day and spend it all on cigarettes and booze, that says more about YOUR work ethic.

She asked him to give her an example of how it's going to be funded and then talked over him and ended the interview. They seem so bias that every question may as well be rhetorical.

There is a simple analogue for UBI and that's rich people. Take someone like Charles Darwin. He contributed massively to science and provided the theory that underpins all of biology. How did he find the time and money to focus much of his life on this topic? He didn't have to spend most of his time earning a wage or had to spend most of it on basic needs, because he was well off. UBI is expected at some level to have the potential of producing more Darwin's in the future.

"It's capitalism so it's OK" - I fucking love employers 😂 Also, "until someone changes the system that's just how it is" in response to someone attempting to change the system is nuclear levels of irony

What I can’t get over is how ‘shocked’ they act for even thinking of such an idea. Cause you know only rich people don’t have to work for money. We can’t do that for the poor! I think it’s very telling that those in positions of wealth and status don’t like the thought of there not being a desperate dysfunctional class. Because if you have enough desperate people, they will work for you in inhumane conditions for scraps of change. And still be grateful for another day they survive. The world is shit! And we’re all stuck in it

The logic behind 'if you give people free money they won't work' makes the asumption that nobody wants more money or things than they already have.
