“Why did he join the military in the first place?”. In part because there’s not a lot of jobs for a Prince in fairly direct succession to the throne but also because they’re expected to do the “right thing”. Following his father and grandfathers footsteps into the military becomes part of that.

5:49 I know the word "strumpet" because it was used in a lyric in Topsy Turvy in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame: "Join the bums and thieves and strumpets" - and it's apparently the only Disney song lyric to use a word for "prostitute".

I remember watching documentary on royal family, and the problem why Harry did go to war was addresed, and it was quite depressing. Because while in the military, he was not addresed as prince, but he was regular pilot, and he was treated as such.So while he was resting between missions, he played games with other pilots and spent some normal time. Those other soldiers also did treat him as a regular friend, nota prince. As far as I remember it was stated that this was the only time in his life when he could experience that. So this is a guy, that had to go to war to have normal friends, and thats f**ed up. I dont remember what documentary it was, since it was many years ago, but I remember being shocked by this.

Someone compared Harry leaving Royal Family to leaving a cult. He was under constant surveliance (by press), his personal freedoms were limited because everything he did reflected on his family and country, he had to ask his granny in order to marry his wife, his social skills were subpar (the n*zi uniform thing), he struggles to find any "normal" job (he even had to give up minilitary because he was a flying golden target bc you know, prince). We obviously will never know how the family works but I think it is pretty fucked that leaving it is difficult. You follow the rules, you have the money. You don't follow them, you're still a target of a potential attack without funds for defence
But you can say similar things about families of celebrities and politicians. Royal Family just makes it even more messed up. Famous since conception shouldn't be a thing but here we are

As someone who has been/known ghostwriters, your job as a ghostwriter is not to write a book to make your subject look good. It's effectively to approach the situation as if you are that person, and you are writing what they would write, if they had the time to write it. So either Harry wrote that himself, or (more likely) he said it in an interview, and made it clear that stuff like that was going in.
Honestly (not to get all British media, just reading it as an artwork) the book seems to sort of enjoy airing out the dirty laundry, and not for anyone as much as Harry himself. He comes off like someone who... Well, frankly, like someone who spent a long time under pressure to be/look/act 'Respectable,' and is not only enjoying the opportunity to not be that, but is somewhat revelling in the fact that he knows this is going to piss off all the people who put that pressure on him. So he's thinking of all the embarassing anecdotes he can, because he knows that that whole time they were expecting him to be good, and speculating weird things, this is what he was up to.
Like, basically saying "You know what? You remember all those weird things you said I was doing? Yeah, not only were you right, it was WAY worse? Oh, you thought my tapping a folder on my leg was disrespectful? How about I talk about how the smell of a certain lotion reminded me of my mother and then immediately talk about slapping that lotion on my dick? How does that one work?"
I mean I can't speculate on how much is true, what he REALLY was thinking,e tc. All I can say is that, from an artistic perspective, the book really revels in that sort of thing.

Why would there be lines outside of bookshops anyway? Don't most people that want a book on day of release pre-order these days. I could see it happening for big pop culture franchise things, for an excuse to hang out with other fans in person as much as getting the book, but for a royal biography?

I am more fascinated by the kinds of people obsessed with the royal family, than I ever will be with the royal family themselves.
