I think in general you become "Laird" in Scotland if you own enough land to rent a piece out for someone else to run a farm on but that doesn't confer a true title

Back in the early 2000's I was in a call centre in Cornwall where one of the clients was selling an acre of land (with a certificate of This-Is-Totally-Not-Bullshit) for £10. The land was on the moon. Yes. The moon. Loads of people bought into this, I don't know if they ever visited their property though.

You can actually buy a title, he local baron sold his title to an academic professor at Oxford Uni, this was when he sold off alot of historic property to pay off his debts.....
The title was sold for around 7 million quid....
Alternatively, you could donate over 1 million to the Tory party or £250,000 to the King, both have been caught selling peerages.
