normal people: "wouldnt it be nice if everything you needed was within 15 minutes of your house so you didnt have to waste hours of your life driving to and from work or the grocery?" conservatives: "the communists want to hermetically seal us in miniature domes to prevent us from driving to the good chick-fil-a the next town over"

First they made it so I could get vegetables in a walkable distance ... and I said nothing Then they located a dentist and doctors surgery close to my house ... and I said nothing Then they added some leasure facilities quite close ... and I said nothing Then they ensured there was an open green space I could use ... but who was left to speak for me? Quite a few neighbours actually, who I've met recently. Nice people on the whole.

This reminds me of a Twitter thread about how the city in Cyberpunk is meant to be dystopian but is largely walkable, while a real dystopic city would be Houston where getting anywhere requires a car, half an hour in either direction, and $5 worth of tolls.

Making cities walkable? You'll be telling me next they're making food edible!

As an American, this reminds me of the Republican politician who asked rhetorically "do you want a taco truck on every street?", and didn't expect the answer 'yes'.

As a city planner it is hilarious watching right wingers act like this is something new or horrible when it's designed around improving your life. It's not left wing or socialist either, it's not one side of the political spectrum or the other.

My mother is an opponent of these measures, last week she complained for days about the new parking system in London, the LEZ, the increase in congestion charge, all some socialist scheme to stop her freedom. She was forced to take crossrail into the city centre and then a tube up to where she needed to be. She took the train from her doorstep to her destination and back. Turns out it was easier and cheaper than taking her car would have been before 2020. We need better public transport and more pedestrianisation, let's gooooo.

Why do people not want the pub to be in walking distance?!?

Living in a 15 minute city sounds like a dream as a disabled American

24:48 in practice 15 minutes cities actually means improving your local amenities, improving your local High Street, improving public transport, improving air quality by reducing car dependency. It does not require cameras at all.

Let me tell you, the people talking about "needing" a car in Paris definitely don't live in Paris. You literally CAN'T drive in Paris, it's a mess and public transport, even with all the stikes and issues, will get you to your destination faster than driving..

Someone needs to tell the woman who said "what if you're looking after your elderly mother" that carers are literally exempt from the new traffic measures, they can go wherever they like (as can taxis, buses, vans, lorries, coaches, health workers and disabled people).

As someone from a small city this just cracks me up.. 15 minute cities already exist everywhere, they've existed for millenia LOL. One of the oldest selling points for cities like mine is going back to a more relaxed pace of life, where everything is within 15 minutes or less.

I live in Melbourne Australia. The most expensive rents/mortgages are in suburbs that have schools, supermarkets, medical clinics, shops, parks nearby. Weird hey? Strange how people enjoy having easy access to thing they need for daily life.

The other issue for the USA, besides the lobbying from big oil and the automotive industry, is that our cities are super expensive to live in, but theyre where all the work is. I can’t afford to like even 30 minutes from where I work because the area is so gentrified. And since rich people can stop bus stops from being placed in their neighborhoods, it creates unserviced areas for public transport.

Imagine being so indoctrinated that you resist having a hospital near your house in case you need emergency attention.

The irony is that most of London already meets the 15 minute ideal, or at least comes pretty close to it. Back when I lived there, I only ever used the car when I was going out of the city.

I love how the way they describe the 15 minutes cities triying to make it sound scary when it sounds like a dream for anyone that is not car-pilled

I literaly grew up in a "commie block" and it was an insane amount of freedom for a child. I could go to the kindergarden and primary school without my parents bringing me, would have been embarassing, and in high school I did not need my parents to taxi me back from the city, unlike my buddies from the sorounding villages. Even better, the girlfriend of my brother had an apartment in a commie block in the middle of Berlin, and within a radius of 300 meters there was a Kindergarden, a primary school and a highschool. I would have killed for the opportunity to grow up in a place like that, probably keeping my friends along the way and having a high degree of independence from my parents.
