To think this demo was released over 20 years ago. Back then I was talking to Peter rather frequently, he had some great ideas for new tricks and routes on some maps. His very old e1m6_056 Nightmare 100% was the first demo that made my jaw drop all the way to the floor. I was in awe back then, and only a few years later it was rather funny because speedrunning had evolved and everyone was just faster and smoother and could beat all those old demos. To think this e1m3_100 has only been beaten by 1 second (fracions, really) is incredible. When I first saw this e1m3_100 my jaw again dropped all the way to the floor... his timing on everything was perfect. At times it seemed he kept the "fire" button pressed constantly while moving with the mouse perfectly in order to send those grenades whenever he needed them to land. It was and still is a thing of beauty. Loved every second of this video, thanks for it.

Wow! Truly an incredible run, can't believe I've never seen this one before. There's so much to love about this, so I guess I'll just point out that he only unequips the grenade launcher for the briefest moment to shoot that secret door.
Thanks for sharing.
Edit: actually, a second thing that I want to talk about is that very first grenade boost. He bounces it off the wall to delay it ever so slightly so he can get ahead of it and get a boost from the direct hit on the zombies. That's some inspirational Quake gameplay right there. The Quake 1 grenade launcher is my favourite weapon in any FPS for a reason.

I think speed runs developed out of competition between friends or others online. I remember as far back as 1994? Me and my friend would compete to see who cleared Doom the fastest. When the game Hexen came out that's when I really pushed to finish a game "as fast as i could". Speed running was not a term used in 1995 I know that for sure. I don't really think anyone coined anything until a few years later but could be mistaken.
Great video!

Good recap! It brought back some nice memories when I made that record in 2000. :) Even though 22 years has passed, I still remember almost all details about this run. I was planning the route (including health&ammos) for about 2 weeks, and the recording took me about 3 months. Just a remark, I intentionally fired 3 grenades at the ogre on the gold key area to make sure to get the kill. I didn't lost time there as I was walking to the healthboxes behind the GK door anyway. On the other hand, if I would have shooted the grenade for the grenadejump sooner that I planned originally (right after the GK door), then I couldn't have placed it to the beginning of the spike trap corridor, and I would not had time to grab the healthbox which I needed to survive the other grenadejump later. :)
