Honestly, this over-exaggerated reaction to cheap makeup being stolen is kind of camp in my opinion. As much as I hate pandering and companies trying to fit in, I do like the actual quality and effort put into the ad. I don't really feel inclined to buy more elf but I'm also not much of a makeup girlie. Idk I like it personally but it's more so that I feel indifferent.

As someone who isn't going to go watch the full advert, that was so funny to me lmao. Seems like absurdist comedy, even the length adds to it to the humour of being so over the top but I get it's not for everyone haha
Good PR move to distract from scandals, not so much a good ad? At least for me who doesn't already care about their stuff

i saw this advertised like it was a blockbuster film coming up on imdb while i was mindlessly looking up something and my first thought was that it was a documentary into elf cosmetics as if they had some shady scandal and now that i’ve seen this and realize it’s just a god awful tiktoker short film commercial has me so stunned

I love it! They’re poking fun at the production style of crime docs. I think they did a fantastic job getting attention. It’s a skip ad I didn’t skip. Not to mention creators with a following like you are talking about elf cosmetics and showing us the ad for free! As far as marketing goes it is such a win! Just seeing the product outsells trying to convince consumers with logic as to why they should buy it. It’s why catchy jingles and image ads (billboards, posters, magazine pages) this is especially true for cosmetics. (Perfume is the hardest to advertise without a tester) they need to convince you to try something new that you don’t need. You won’t remember the stats or facts, but you’ll be more aware the brand when you’re shopping and maybe try some testers. They just want to get you to the section logic comes in when you test it and compare price. You’re not there yet when you’re at home watching the ad. It needs to stick in your mind for a time in the future. Just getting people to use testers out of curiosity or browse colors when they usually stick to one or two other makeup stalls is HUGE. It’s changing behavior and is a major win!

So, the controversy around the cult is actually really interesting. Since apparently an 'anonymous source' was DMing influncers about it. Someone looked into it & found out there were these guys trying to short stock elf by tanking their reputation and that was the only big possible controversy they could dig up.
