It's actually scary to create a game without knowing if it will be successful or not. I can totally relate to this feeling. I'm currently working on porting my most successful Flash game "Get a Little Gold" to mobile, and I really don't know how it will perform or if it will find its audience. It's driving me crazy.

Considering their beginning making games like Kings Field before continuing into the next generation with games like Eternal Ring, Evergrace and Kuon.. These guys know a lot about taking chances and commercial failure. They've been behind very successful series such as Armored Core but during the 2000's their fantasy games were more endearing than anything.
Demon Souls and then Dark Souls was when they finally seemed to hit the mark in the fantasy market and see some much deserved success.
That said, as someone who's followed them from the 90's I would say I felt that Elden Ring is strangely evocative of Evergrace and Eternal Ring and not necessarily in a good way. The worlds/environments in those games are also pretty big for the time but very very hollow ( no pun intended ).
It's still a great game, and even a 'bad' FromSoftware game is still pretty good, but I can see why there was skepticism behind the scenes.

I think open world games just don't work for me. I love exploring tightly designed branching worlds more than anything, but open worlds completely punish my desire to search every nook and cranny. I doubt I'll ever finish Elden Ring, just because exploring the vast world to the level of detail I enjoy got dull by the third time you run across all the same encounter types, I got rather overleveled (I should get better at self imposed limitations to counteract that, but still) and I just can't bring myself to rush to the finale to get it done, because I know it would feel sucky to me.
