It’s crazy to think that on multiple occasions, the fate of the world was on a knife edge of diplomacy and sheer luck! I shudder to think what kind of a world we would have inherited had full scale nuclear war actually occurred. Excellent documentary!

I can't agree with the Khrushchev "last gamble" tone that this video has. At this point, allowing a nuclear buildup around the USSR was unacceptable by any moral standards. The US was already an aggressor in the Vietnam war demonstrating how far it is willing to go. Decisive action was needed, and he correctly deduced that since the USSR is able to deliver a devastating attack on the US, not only to Europe, the US would have to back down.
Comparing the Castro attitude of "nuke em all" along with the many of the Kennedy stuff, Khrushchev was far less of a "hothead". He didn't want these missiles in Cuba, he needed them to make a point. Otherwise, and knowing how many times US generals "begged" for the use of nuclear weapons, there is a high possibility of encountering the nuclear threat by the US with a clear disadvantage. Castro was a hotheaded "revolutionary", the US, with all its "values", has no excuse. Feeling safe while other countries could burn is very egotistical.
It was quite a thought-out operation that delivered exactly what it should. The Cuban sovereignty was a slap on the face, the removal of the weapons that threatened the USSR, established respect, opened a communication line, and shuttered the feeling of complete security that the US had. Still, this was used in propaganda inflating the Red Scare.
