as someone with disordered eating, "girl dinner" is honestly great. The idea that I don't have to make a whole meal and can just shove a bunch of random things on my plate that Im feeling okay to eat at the moment has been great. I struggle so much sometimes, but eating a bowl of grapes with a bagel and some cheezits is better than just not eating.

This trend reminded me that you can't win online. I saw 2 different creators, one thin and one fat, posting a happy meal as their girl dinner. And BOTH got hate. The thin one was promoting disordered eating and the fat one was promoting obesity. But I guess it reminded me that people will say mean things no matter what so just do whatever makes you happy?? Also best girl dinner is a plate of fries and a Caesar salad 🤤

"Eating something is better than eating nothing" is exactly the motto that saved me after I spent six months barely eating because I'd started on a stimulant for my ADHD. Otherwise I would think, "I need to cook something that's Good For Me, but all I want is crap, so I'm just not going to eat anything." Things that would be considered "girl dinners" are what my brain is capable of handling most days.

As someone with an eating disorder, I found this trend helpful. It encouraged actually eating something, by showing how food can be non-threatening: no complicated preparation, no expectations, no social obligation, nothing other then the simplicity of a comfy meal. I wasn't even triggered until someone mentioned ED's. If you ask me, the media's just glorifying EDs again.

It's hilarious that there are people acting like girl dinner didn't exist until this trend on social media started. Girl dinner has always existed, the trend just put a spotlight on it. If you're tired, busy, broke, you're going to just throw something together with what you have and it may end up being really weird. If you aren't very hungry or maybe not feeling well, you're going to just eat whatever sounds good in the moment and that might be mac n cheese and a popcicle. Like you said, eating something is better than eating nothing.

When I was growing up, my mom would occasionally announce it was a "hunt and gather night." Which was code for 'I don't want to cook. Go look in the pantry/fridge and fend for yourself.' On those nights, we'd usually eat something like cereal, a P&J sandwich, ramen, or a charcuterie(ish) hodgepodge. It was never really about the portion size, so much as a rejection of the expectation that dinner has to be a thoughtful, elaborately cooked meal (esp one prepared by our mom). What I think is most interesting about the "girl dinner" trend is a) men probably eat in an equally lazy/chaotic/unplanned way too, and b) these women say they eat this way specifically when they are alone. It seems like the trend is more so revealing about our cultural expectations of what counts as a "meal," as well as the gender norms/ expectations about women preparing/eating in a way to satisfy those around them (and contrasting it to their actual eating preferences).

I loved the trend because it was just crappy kids food like mac n' cheese in a wineglass or ramen in a plastic cup. It was dispensing the whole "put-together" woman and acknowledging that sometimes we're tired and we make stupid food for dinner like college students. I've been seeing a lot more of the ED videos about it though which is really sad

I’m a guy who’s recovered (mostly) from anorexia and I love this trend. Eating something is always better than eating nothing, and girl dinner enjoyers understand this. We tend to restrict ourselves a lot with food culture and dumb rules so it’s pretty liberating to just eat whatever the hell you want no matter what time of day it is or where you are or what you ate last

I make my kid "baby dinner" all the time. It's just a random bunch of food that covers their nutritional bases. They don't know that it's weird to eat leftover beef stirfry, a blueberry muffin, a slice of cheese and some cucumber and tomato for dinner.
For me personally the concept of "girl dinner" has helped relieve some of the guilt that comes from not having the mental or physical energy to cook a whole meal while still getting in the nutrients I need. Societal pressures can make me feel like I've "failed as a woman" if I don't have a beautiful plated dinner ready every night and although I know that pressure is ridiculous, this trend has been helpful in reminding me of that.

I used to call it depression meals but recently tried to switch to more positive language and went with "picnic meal" since it usually ends up being similar foods for me that I'd imagine for a picnic. Makes it feel a lot more satisfying so I get where the girl dinner appeal comes from, even though I hadn't heard if it before this video.
I've also seen someone call it a tray meal, with their method being whenever you have energy, stock a tray with lots of things you like to eat that don't need prep/are pre-prepared, then you can just pull out the tray from your fridge whenever you need and have a full meal(s) ready to go or snacks to graze on. Then you eat your fill and put the while tray back ready for next time.

I'm a man, but my version of "girl dinner" is going to the fridge in the middle of the night and having a small bite of everything that's in there until the total food eaten feels like a meal 😂
