In the church I grew up in,(and due to me being a minor, still made to go to) a rumour was started about me from a PARENT, an adult, she was in 40âs, and she made a rumour about me being gay. I wasnât invited to hang out at my friends houses anymore, my mum started giving me âtalksâ, they spoke more about the âworldly homosexualsâ in church and youth group, I wasnât allowed to be a kids church leader, parents warned girls my age, my friends, to never be alone with me.
I was 12.

I feel like Christians across the board (traditional or progressive) lose sight of why we are Christian in the first place. When we are born again, we want live as the new creation we are, which should lead us to live lives that glorify God and not ourselves.
When phrases like âmy truth is that ______â come up, it seems to all center around the individual. âMy truthâ seeks affirmation for a preconceived understanding. I know people like to cater the Bible to how they feel the world should work (I have too), but isnât that a flawed ideology, especially as a Christian? Proverbs 3:5 talks about ânot leaning on your own understandingâ, why? Because what we make of this world is flawed and we will certainly be enticed to start living in a way that doesnât honor our Lord. We have a sin nature and will always be drawn to living in sinful ways, full stop.
In the super self-centered culture that we live in today, modern Christians can start to ask âwhat can God bring to the table that I didnât have beforeâ or âhow can believing in God benefit meâ or âwhat pieces of the Bible affirm my old lifestyle, and what parts donât, and the parts that donât, how can they be read in a way that justifies the way I live so I donât have to let go of my old life?â
Donât get me wrong, there are benefits that come with giving your life to Jesus. The Holy Spirit, a personal relationship with God, and most famously living in eternity with God. And we are called to enjoy and be grateful for and put our hope in all of these things. But the benefits of being saved DO NOT start with or revolve around us, or and they certainly donât conform to what we think the benefits should be.

Hi, Iâm an ally and a Christian. Just wanted to show some support since a lot of comments are so hateful. Itâs really sad how many âChristiansâ are pushing people away from the church and sinning by saying cruel things. Iâm glad these pastors are spreading love and showing that everyone is welcomed by God.

Being a gay Christian is difficult at times because it's so hard to find people who understand you. Speaking with other Christians is hard because you don't know whether they are going to hate you or not. Compare that to talking to other LGBTQ people where they don't hate me for it; obviously, it is just a lot of them don't understand. It's hard to find a place where I belong in the Christian community because there's so much hate towards people like me there. I wish I could go to a church and experience that, but it's hard to find inclusive churches.

It's interesting to see how sometimes people get called out for interpreting religion a certain way when technically we all sort of do that. It's not like there's a hive mind of people that feel exactly the same about anything. In a way, no matter how similar a person's spiritual beliefs may be to another's, no two people will ever believe in the same religion or the same diety- not even within Christianity.
So at the end of the day we should just let each other be. And whatever happens after death will be our own personal business and then we can go from there

This was a great conversation! I wish I had had people like this while I was questioning my faith. I left catholicism due to the mean and painful rhetoric I heard against the LGBT community prior to even figuring out my own bisexuality because it felt too uncomfortable to be a part of that type of community.

While I no longer identify as Christian, I was so lucky to be raised Episcopalian. Being gay was never an issue within my church, and as I've seen over the years in the Episcopalian church in general. Again, I'm no longer in the faith, but it just makes me happy to know that when I do occasionally attend services with my family I'm not unwelcome or unaccepted.
