Carved into the southeast shoulder of Mount Saint Helens, is a deep and narrow gorge, the name of which is derived from a shocking encounter which was reported to have taken place there in July of 1924. A true struggle between man and beast, which would end up becoming known as the Battle of Ape Canyon.

A Youtuber named Bob Gymlan put this story on my radar years ago when he told this story, and since then I look into it at every chance. Good work and I hope to see more from this channel soon!

The big foot along with the missing 411 topics are some of my favorite materials to watch. Somehow, I think they are interrelated.

I live an hour away from Ape Canyon and I have fly-fished every river and lake in that area. I nearly always fish until too dark to see then head back to the truck. Iā€™ve heard whoops and tree knocking and had rocks thrown into rivers near me but not at all close to me. I think they were always just letting me know they are there, although I didnā€™t know it at the time. It can be extremely unsettling, to say the very least!

"But as settlers continued to push deeper and deeper into the traditional hunting grounds of the indigenous tribes of North America, they would sometimes find that the legends of the people they were encroaching upon had a worrying tendency to push back." I love this line for its ominous dramatic quality.

I was a ten year old boy when Mt. Saint Helens erupted in May of 1980, and if thereā€™s one thing that I remember thinking as the immense eruption blanketed the land all around with ash, it was questioning how anything could possibly survive tons and tons of material falling so quickly. Perhaps people havenā€™t been able to find those creatures any more because they were buried in a North American Pompeii.

I always love stories like this: Bigfoot, Thunderbirds, Mermaids, Mothman, Lochness Monster and other cryptids. More like this please.

Something to point out between the versions put forth between Bedtime Stories and Bob Gimlin's accounts of this story: 1. Beck's account was not fully recorded until 1967 by his son Roger who informed that the story was embellished from what was originally recorded. And even then, Fred Beck never referred to the creatures as 'gorillas' or apes, but rather Moutain devils as he was a spiritualist who believed them to be spirits hostile to his group. 2. It was Marion Sr, not Beck, who shot at the supposed Saquatch-like creature, but newspapers after would claim Beck shot and killed one of the creatures. Also, Beck never claimed he had killed any of the creatures, and even Marion doubted he had hit the beast with his shot. Roger reported that Fred and Marion were alone when this encounter took place, though. 3. Beck and his company had actually been to the supposed area where the incident took place in 1922, and they had found tracks pertaining to the creatures during that venture in the dirt near their cabin, so they were already aware that something lived in that vicinity which put the fear of God in them. 4. Beck allegedly told his companions not to talk about the encounter to anyone, but their story was out within 24 hours of arriving in Kelso. Despite this, none of the team ever actually went back to the site of the attack, so the newspapers groups dubbed several different sites as 'Ape Canyon' and even posed several 'actors' to stand in for Beck's team, with pictures and everything. Take what you will from both versions, however, they are both informative and interesting to look into.

Such a good episode. Love stuff to do with Bigfoot. But for me, the highlight was that waterfall scene. Just wow. Like a moving oil painting. Loved it, and would love to get it as a background for my desktop!

I live in Kelso Wa and it's such a mysterious place people don't know a whole lot about the storys of supernatural events on and around Mount Saint Helens is shocking and every now and then you hear of someone just disappearing with no trace.

Excellent, as per your usual guys! šŸ‘šŸ™ŒšŸ‘šŸ‘ Yes, these beings exist, I've seen them 4 times as a kid. Twice in a moving vehicle (my dad was driving both times, & he liked to put the cruise control on at 70 mph), & twice within 15 - 20 feet from me, while I was blackberry picking on the side of a highway when I'm was 13. The 1st time we were driving in northern California, coming from our home in Southern Oregon a small town called Klamath Falls, we were going to Susanville CA. It was big (to my 10 year old eyes it seemed like it was at 12 feet tall), it was running from the side of the road & jumped across the left lane into the middle then jumped again to the other side of the embankment, it never slowed down or looked at us, he (I've always thought that it was a he) had long dark brown hair not fur. The next time, I think that we were near Redding CA on the I-5, going towards highway 97 back home to Southern Oregon. This time it was a smaller one with reddish-brown hair (it didn't look like fur but more like human hair), & it was a female because she had breasts, she looked to be about 5'5 - 5'7-ish, she ran across the road & went down the embankment, I was in the back with my younger siblings (who were asleep, it was past midnight), & dad was driving, & mom was in the passenger seat sleeping also, I quickly turned & looked out the back window, & I saw a little one - maybe 3-4 feet tall, with dark brown hair, it ran across the road following the other one (quite possibly it's mama) it stopped at the side of the road & looked at us as we drove away, & then it ran down the embankment too.

If thereā€™s a better story telling format on the internet Iā€™ve not heard it. The intriguing voice , the set up of the narrative , the research , the art : it all just flows like butter and honey . These are such a work of art I could listen to them over and over even aware of how the story ends . The whole journey is an experience . Thank you and double thank you for these gold nuggets!

One of the coolest things about this story is the site being found years later. Now who really knows if all the details Beck claimed actually happened. Either from the other experiences in his book, or all the details of the encounter. We will never truly know, just as Ostman and Rowe, Ruby Creek, Cowopalis and Bauman....

Is it just me or are the drawings becoming more detailed? Absolutely splendid. I love the black and white paintings with the rare splash of color to highlight details, making even a mundane taillight seem eerie.

I'll never forget when it blew. We stayed at our friends house and thought her over weight sister had fallen out of her bed that Sunday morning. I felt bad when we figured out the cause of the boom. We were north of Seattle and still heard and felt the eruption vividly. Seven yrs old and will never forget it!
