"I'm not really good at explaining things, but I'll try." He took a deep breath. "I think I love you."
She laughed, thinking it was a joke. Of course she thought that. It was what he did. He made jokes, he relented. He was sarcasm, snark, and wit.
Never serious.
It was something he did to suppress those things from surfacing. No one was allowed to know the nightmares that consumed his mind so often that he'd started to dread sleeping. No one could know the thoughts he had, chasing each other round and round until he needed something numbing to shut it up.
He didn't want pity.
He didn't want to deal with reality, with his own problems.
So he was there to make light of situations. People needed him to defuse the heavy blanket of weight that could be draped over a room.
And it was stupid what he was doing. After all, he knew that his best friend never looked at him that way. He just had to get this off his chest.
"Listen to me," he tried again. "I need-" he was getting frustrated. "Stop laughing!"
Immediately, her giggles died off. "What? Are you okay?"
"No," he muttered. "I'm not."
"I don't - do you want to talk about it?" Her expression grew grim and worried.
He stared at her, wondering what he looked like through her eyes. A small, fragile boy like he felt? A clumsy kid, an easy smile, a good natured manner like he tried to play off? He didn't know. It could be neither. Something entirely different. Just not someone she loved; not like that. He was smart enough to know that, at least. "No," he said finally. "I don't want to talk about it. I'm sorry." He was always doing that; apologizing. He didn't even know what he was apologizing for. "I'm just gonna home and die of embarrassment now after doing that."
"Doing what?"
"This." And he ran straight into the pole that was in front of them as they were walking, careful to not actually hurt himself. He'd thrown that without actually caring if it hit its mark, but it did, and he was distantly aware of her laughter as he came to the realization that he'd never have the courage to tell her again.
Because deep down, he knew he wasn't supposed to fall in love with her. He was there for comic relief, for a friend to stand by at a lame party.
People like him, like us? We can't fall in love with people like them. We're just the side character.

I'm the bestfriend who watches the main character fall in love with someone who isn't me.
There's scenes of me constantly hiding my feelings, and holding my tongue; just so I can see the main character be happy. By the time I realized my feelings, we were already too close to change. I'm just the side character who comforts you, and it will stay that way.
EDIT:
Just wanted to say, even if you feel like a side character, don't forget: side characters' have their own story too, and are often fan favorites.
Life kinda sucks sometimes and it gets hard, especially when you care about those who you can't seem to keep up with.
On the flip side, you'll have your moments. Moments that'd make it into edits and fan favorite clips.
Moments you'll never forget.
Moments you'll feel alive, like you're supposed to be there.
