ok so someone help me out here because we gotta fill in the blanks. The family tree is that Donna is Gloria's mother, Jimmy is Gloria's son, and Junior is Gloria's grandson so Jimmy's son. They're in the same house as Jimmy grew up in with Gloria as his mother who was an alcoholic. We assume Jimmy is also an alcoholic, but in this string of characters the only ones that aren't are Junior and Donna, which could be why we see the figure we know as Donna sitting on Junior's bed because all he wanted was a "mother for the first time" even though in Donna we hear that she hates the name Junior, so that could be the subtle connection between these two. We assume Jimmy's alcoholism was triggered by growing up with Gloria being a bad influence on him and creating these bad habits, and the reason Junior didn't turn to alcoholism we're assuming is because of the girl in "It Wasn't Easy to be Happy For You," which is why we see him scrolling through her Instagram page instead of drinking. This girl has become his coping mechanism with his life, even when she isn't still in his life since we assume they have broken up. We see the opposite with Jimmy at the end when we hear Gloria again because he sees a figure in the doorway that we assume was a love of his that he probably lost due to his alcoholism, just as Gloria lost her husband because of her alcoholism. We see twice in this music video, once when Jimmy tries to wake him up and the other time when Jimmy is chasing him, Junior attempts some sort of martial arts as a defense tactic which enforces the understanding that Jimmy abuses Junior. *Some of these might be a stretch or just flat out wrong; just trying to piece it together*

if you grew up with parents like this, you'll cry when you see this. It's like someone finally gets it.

I really love how the lumineers modernized this video by having junior scroll through his instagram. This shows viewers that these problems are happening around us everyday. Kids are and have been put into unsafe environments and they can't do anything about it. We don't know half of the stuff that goes on in different communities. This video series is really eye opening.

Listened to this while they took me to rehab. I never want to be a drunk mother. They helped me realize I was the leader of the landslide.

My mom has been missing for 5 years now. This song has really been important to me... She was a homeless drug addict all my life who chose drugs over her family on a daily basis.. for 20+ years.. but I love her so much... I always had rose colored glasses on and couldn't see the bad in her.. I just idolized her.... Finally, 5 years after she vanished, I'm starting to mature and noticing all the bad stuff about her... As you can imagine, that fills me with immense guilt to think of her badly when she is still missing... it's been so hard to figure out mentally... This song.... Has helped me so much... It helped me come to terms with the fact that she was a bad mother... Not a mother at all my dad raised us all alone... it's a hard thing to realize when she is actively missing... I just want to thank you Lumineers for making this song. It has truly, truly helped me come to terms with this.

I can only compare the growth of songwriting of this band to the great Bob Dylan... starting with quality songs that were great stories based on happy things. Then moving into writing meaningful songs about serious subjects but keeping the same amazing melodic writing.

They played this for one of the first times at Bonnaroo in 2019. At the time, my mother had officially reached rock bottom and was living on the street from her addiction and alcoholism. I remember not being able to enjoy myself during most of the festival out of fear and worry for her. During lumineers set, he said this song is for those how have/are dealt with alcoholism in their life. This song heard me right then and there. Bawled my eyes out uncontrollably. Was able to enjoy myself for the rest of the weekend. This song will always be my fav from any artist never had a song do so much for me. I especially appreciate the part “maybe when she’s dead and gone I’ll get some sleep”. To me it’s the idea of not having to worry about her anymore.

Gloria is the Leader of the Landslide. The lyrics are from Jimmy's perspective, not Juniors. The Landslide is the knock on effect of addiction from one generation to the next. After listening to this a few more times I have a few new thoughts, but my previous comment is still mostly what I think :) I'll repeat some stuff since I feel like I get it a bit more now (apologies if this is a repeat of my previous comment). In chapter 1, both 'Donna' and 'Gloria' were also written from the perspective of Jimmy, her son. Chapter II I believe is a continuation but we're seeing Junior observe the effects his grandmother's alcoholism has had on his father, Jimmy. I truly believe Jimmy is doing his best to raise his son: 1) when he wakes Junior up to bury the dog this doesn't seem like it's the first time his Dad has woken him up in the mornings (ordinarily to get him to school whilst Jimmy goes off to work to support them both - Jimmy has a name on his shirt so he obviously works), 2) he looks on his son fondly just before tossing him a beer, he wants to include his son and he's happy he's there (of course Jimmy's concept of 'normal' is completely messed up because of his own child hood and ongoing problems with his alcoholic mother), 3) I think Jimmy bought Junior the dog (Rusty) to keep him company and help fill the hole left by Junior's absent mother (Gloria wasn't able to fill that gap for Junior, obviously). The lyrics seem to refer to Jimmy struggling with his mother's alcoholism, trying to help her and either Gloria left the family home of her own will or Jimmy has kicked her out for the safety of Junior. Jimmy wonders, 'Is she dead, is she fine....Every day, every night....Fate has dealt me a lonely blow, I said, ooh....Tried to help, only hurt.....In the end I made it worse.....Is she dead, is she fine....Every day, every night' When we see Junior scrolling through pics of the girl from 'It Wasn't Easy To Be Happy For You'....I think this confirms that she was a figment of his imagination. The pics aren't personal to him (not sent to Junior from his girlfriend) but pics of a girl he fantasizes about. It further illustrates how void of female affection Juniors life has been :( Also I don't think the woman Jimmy looks at at the end is necessarily related directly to the story but may signify Jimmy constantly trying to 'find a new woman' to bring into Jimmy and Junior's life.....but his destructive behaviour (alcohol and drug abuse) to cope with the rough life he's lead means that he never had healthy relationships with women. I suspect this woman is one in a long line of failed relationships for Jimmy. This might also be why Junior doesn't have a 'real' girlfriend....he's seen his Dad mess it up with the wrong woman so many times, he doesn't want to repeat his Dad's mistakes....and a fantasy girl can't let him down like every other woman in his life has!
