Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world observe a month-long fast from dawn until sunset.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and is considered a way to purify the soul and strengthen one's relationship with God.
Muslims who are able to fast abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours, with exceptions made for those who are pregnant or have health conditions that prevent them from fasting.
The fast is broken each evening at sunset with a meal called iftar, which typically includes dates and water, followed by a larger meal with family and friends.
Iftar is a time for Muslims to come together and express gratitude for the blessings of the day, as well as to share food and hospitality with those in need.
