Another cool aspect of stages is when they change between matches. Old SNK games, especially the classic KoF games, did this really well.
In ‘96 there was a sick desert stage which would get brighter and then darker between rounds to reflect the sunset in the background
‘98 had a Spain stage which would progress from daytime to night, and the brickwork on the stage went from yellow to red to green as the lighting changed. ‘98 also had the New York and temple stages which also had aesthetic as hell changes in the background’s lighting
‘99 has the best stage in the series with the park stage, which progressed from cloudless, to overcast, to this extremely aesthetic rain storm

Honestly the main draw of fighting games for me wasn't necessarily the gameplay at first but the art and animation, like i didn't know what I was doing and I was getting rocked hard by my friends who knew how to play fighting games but the aesthetic alone was enough to get me through the learning process(Garou Mark Of The Wolves and 3rd Strike were the games I played), I think not just the backgrounds but aesthetics in general are severely under appreciated(unless it's like KOF13 good or MVCI bad)

Garou has the best fucking stages. Like if you win with Rock in Garou (I know that'll never happen, but just for the sake of argument)a win pose of his is he throws his jacket away, and there's a River stage where if that happens, the jacket just flows away. That game is just such good vibes man.
Also nice video mate. SFV kinda did the whole customizable stage thing, but it's not really used all that much lol.

I like that in Dead or Alive 5 there's a stage where you can throw your opponent against a golden bell, summoning a giant Buddha statue, then throw your opponent on said Buddha statue to deal an insane amount of damage, potentially ending the fight.
I also like King of Fighters stages, they're pretty.

In my honest opinion, SF3 Second Impact probably has my favourite selection of stages
All of them feel entirely distinct. Sean's in the middle of a Brazil street with a car carrying fruit toppled over, Yuns stage in bustling Hong Kong, Yangs in a seedy establishment where a dude will freak out if you break his shit. Elenas night time bridge overlooking a forest valley, Alex atop a New York building with a massive billboard of the American flag in the background, Necros creepy ass train rushing out of Russia with strange people in the back, Oros dank cave with all his pets, the cat freaking out at the fight, need I go on?
Seriously idk if you've seen em but they pretty
