As I watch him walk into school every day I always admired him. Each time he stepped into class I saw the big smile on his face. He was ready to make everybody’s day. But on February 16th, every year on February 16th. H- he changes- his smile turns upside down. He speaks to no one, looks at no one. Every day except the 16th he makes the whole class laugh, he fills the air with positivity like perfume. Why the 16th? Why that day? He’s the class clown that never fails to make someone laugh. Why is he so bitter to himself on February 16th. No matter how sad he looks he always seemed to show up for school-
February 16th
Instead of finding him being loud or cracking a joke he just walks in. You wouldn’t of noticed if he walked in. Dressed in grey, he looked down at the floor as if he’s always been like that. Two February 16th’s go by and one day.. he doesn’t walk into the class at all. Ever since that day I never saw him again. He could have transferred? Who knows.
Years after graduating I run into an old high school friend. The February 16th boy came to mind and it didn’t hurt to ask...
Turns out, every time the clock hits 12am and switches to February 16th a switch in his brain just turned off. The happiness that everyone saw just turned off. The ptsd he suffered was severe but no one ever noticed. On February 16th, 2018 his girlfriend got into a critical car crash. She died while laying her hand against his heart. Every year on February 16th the heart still feels the touch of her fingers... the pain is so excruciating that it changes his whole attitude, his whole body. Those jokes that he made to make everybody’s day.. those were just coping mechanisms. The smile he had every time he walked into class, that was just a mask. He still appeared at school because when they first met he was struggling grades wise. She helped him, she tutored him.. and ever since that day they were madly in love. On her deathbed he promised he would still do well in school. Until the last day I saw him.. February 16th. The feeling of her fingers didn’t touch his heart. They gripped his heart and crushed it.. he died of a heart attack and was never spoken of again. When they’re names are brought up they aren’t called by their given identity. We call them, Romeo and Juliet..

I meet a girl camping. I throw the football to her, and make her laugh. we talk for a while then go to the lake later that night with our friends. me and her stare across the foggy water enjoying life before we have to go back. We hangout the next day and ride our longboards. that very same day, we lay on the ground watching the stars with her hand in mine. it was the next morning when we would leave and never see each other again. we miss each other so much, texting back and fourth for months until she started getting dry, like I did something wrong. I couldn't figure it out. she stopped talking to me. I did nothing. heather was her favorite song, it gets me every time.
