Bellbirds in Australia (bell minor, I think). Feel emotional to hear it, as it was a moment of peace during one of the most distressing times in my life. Some rest area on the side of the road near NSW.

They were high up in the trees, so no visuals of them on camera. Just their habitat.

This was at the end of a two-month stay in a psych unit. Before leaving Australia to return to New Zealand, extremely traumatised. Water calms me. The bellbird had the most enchanting sound, compared to some of the more squawky birds in Australia.

Recorded this video today. Wasn't sure whether to upload it to this mental health-focussed channel or my other Soar Purpose channel (more creative expression). It had a colour theme, I chose to upload it there. I've always been interested in colour but not fashion.

I mentioned how I preferred to be 'invisible' most of my life. It's one reason I didn't wear makeup in most of my videos and tried to look at plain as possible. Speaking on video was very hard for me. I've gotten more used to it now.

Wore a little makeup in this video and chose some colours I felt suited me.

I am drawn to bright colours but most don't actually suit my colouring very well. Suit more a bit muted. I used to dye my hair occasionally but haven't bothered for years now.

Wearing "deep autumn" colours today. Cream T-shirt & a dark muted green shirt as a lightweight jacket. Never been into fashion but always been interested in colours.

Ready for my part-time job.

With my birdies. My original paintings plus a unique handmade cushion a lady made from old blankets. All of kereru.

I've actually struggled quite a lot with over 25kg weight gain on bipolar meds. I don't like how I look in the mirror. My favourite NZ bird, the kereru, is big & still beautiful.

This year has been a journey of embracing more natural colours in my paintings, which I used to dismiss as "boring".

For me, colour expresses mood.

Sorted out my work wardrobe for the warmer months. Added some new items, which I will be trying out.

I am on a low income, so it makes sense if my wardrobe coordinates. Hence revisiting for the first time in years, choosing colours which complement my colouring. Typed as a 'deep autumn' decades ago.

Despite my love of colour, I've never actually been into fashion. Items need to be comfortable, practical and affordable for me.

My main job this weekend was to sort out my (mainly) work wardrobe for the summer months. Added some items.

Have a tiny wardrobe compared to most people. Some items, I've kept for years.

Never been into fashion but will try make more of an effort to choose more flattering pieces. Still needs to be comfortable, affordable (on a low income) & practical though.

Have two pairs of work shoes in "pistachio" (neutral green) & "pumpkin" (orange), which go with most things.

One of my longtime interests is colour. Which is actually one of the reasons I did a chemistry degree plus I am an artist.

Never been much interested in fashion though & don't like clothes shopping.

Finally replaced my colour swatch which is supposed to make clothes shopping easier. Lost the original one years ago.

In this video, I compared the colours to some of my paintings.

I was skeptical about the idea that artists tend to paint in their colour "season".

I was typed as a "deep autumn" decades ago. Also lost the swatch years ago. Basically, suit more deeper & richer colours, warm to neutral. Avoid pastels.

Finally bought a new swatch (Color Me Beautiful NZ). Turns out my 2 metaphorical self-portrait kereru paintings are in the deep autumn palette.

From an artist's perspective, I had painted with mostly warmer colours for one & mostly cooler for the other, reflecting mood & metaphor. I was surprised the cooler one was still "in palette".

Haven't compared with my other paintings yet but I rarely paint with pastels.

I don't actually like clothes shopping & don't buy clothes often. Turns out my wardrobe is mostly "deep autumn" palette. I just avoided pastels.

I am skeptical of online analysis, as apparent colour can change a lot with lighting & auto balance on cameras.

My creative expression mainly takes place in a rented bedroom. I am very introverted and I work on my projects alone. My current book project is taking years, just plodding away at it. I've written in the description what I was doing in this video.

Very challenging projects, that some people would have scoffed at, actually keep me going. I have no fixed deadlines. It takes as long as it takes. I make my own goals within that.

My creative outlets are all linked. The paintings have often been visual mindmaps and a form of processing to assist with writing, another form of processing (trauma, grief). My books, inspired by my experiences, are about relationships with disabilities.

Sometimes I've been asked if I'm Australian (based on my accent).

To the untrained ear, Australian & New Zealander accents can sound similar.

Some examples with the main differences. Mostly the vowels. youtube.com/shorts/1LKmP7yllc...
