Screen savers used to actually save the screen from literally damaging itself, but that was a LOOOONG time ago. Old CRT monitors, in the early days with just green monochrome displays (see the movie War Games), before we got all these newer LCD / TFT screens, used to be left on the same screen all the time, for example the data-entry screen for whatever the company or government agency does. Like at the DMV most of the time it'd be a screen for entering a driver's name and address. Without the screen saver, the lit up portions of the screen would literally start to melt or burn after a month or so of the same image non-stop, such that you could still see that image burned into the glass after turning the computer off. Modern screens don't have that problem.
Interestingly, I think this actually kind of matches your mental screen saver analogy.
