To clear some things up about this: Frances Quinlan is the lead singer/songwriter of the indie band Hop Along. Hop along started as a solo project in 2004 or something and back then it was called Hop Along, Queen Ansleis. Frances wrote this song along with the rest of Freshman Year in her freshman year of college, recorded it in her basement over the following summer, and released it on CDs she burned herself right before going back for sophomore year of college in 2005. The 15th anniversary of this was about a week ago and she decided to finally release the songs properly onto Spotify and YouTube. Nobody covered anything, nobody stole the song from anyone.
Edit: to “burn” a CD is to track music onto it with a computer.

From what I could gather, the meaning of this song is a white woman and black man falling in love in a time where their love would be considered unnatural and “forbidden”, basically during the time where different races were segregated. That is why it is mentioned “my mother said I would surely go to hell” and talks of a government man in this song are mentioned a lot, because their love is literally considered illegal. The title of the song also proves the point, as one being orange could be synonymous with one wearing prison garments.
I’ve heard this from other comments beforehand, but I’ve never heard anyone say this specific interpretation of the song yet in this comment section below.

I'm just gonna say it now, it's really sad to see only this song get popular. Bruno is Orange does definitely deserve the fame but Hop Along's other songs are really nice too, I personally recommend Sirens and Workers. I just hope at some point it's more than just this one and Goose and the Wren to get big.

Bruno, what did you tell that man?
He's a clever man, did you know?
I bet he works for the government
And I know you know I know
I can't control thoughts of things I needed
I believe everybody needs some encouragement
I think its real unfair, that you should put him there
All we did is kiss, on my grave, i swear
Where did you find his shoes? A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
I think it's real unfair that you should put him there
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
Where did you find his shoes? A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
Some dull morning we were wearing sheets
And he whispered, "I think that they know better than me."
See this hand that pushed you into the creek?
I'm sorry, was just fun, and you were laughing
We were running towards the street
And I wrote my name into the fresh painted yellow line
And you wrote your name right there next to mine
We had to dodge a truck
He almost hit a bug
I think we had some luck
And for two bucks
We bought some bread
And fed the grey geese
And the ducks
Everyone will come, everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same if you didn't tell
My mother says that I will surely go to hell
Please be a good man, please say you won't tell
Everyone will come, everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same if you didn't tell
My mother says that I will surely go to hell
Please be a good man, please say you won't tell
Did you know that that boy is an armed man?
Bearing flowers into hands
Very able to hold me down
(And love me more than anyone)
Bruno, what happened to your good sense?
I broke down, that man's good
I bet he works for the government
Did you hear about that, mother? Broke her legs in two
And said, "it was too dangerous out there to walk so, i had to save you"
I think it's real unfair that you should put him there
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
Where did you find his shoes? A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
I think it's real unfair that you should put him there
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
Where did you find his shoes? A lock of my hair?
All we did is kiss, on my grave, I swear
Everyone will come, everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same if you didn't tell
My mother says that I will surely go to hell
Please be a good man, please say you won't tell
Everyone will come, everyone will yell
I'd thank you just the same if you didn't tell
My mother says that I will surely go to hell
Please be a good man, please say you won't tell
Bruno, did you know that the Greeks in the morning would eat oranges?
They were firm believers in fruit-curing fevers, and I agree
See, they believe that an orange warms the stomach

Meaning of song: A white girl and black man are in love. Thats where "Did you know that boy is an armed man?" And "Its too dangerous out there to walk" lines come from. Everyone thinks they should go to hell. "My mother says that I will surely go to hell". Bruno is the name of the man. Its called "Bruno is orange" because he went to jail, and orange is the color of prison suits.

I love the switch from the calm and sweet voice to the aggresive and more energetic one 2:01

I think for each person this can mean different things.
For me, it reminds me of myself. In this song, I hear of a young girl who fell in love with a much older man. She was used by him and exploited. But she is young, she doesn't understand much. Yet she defends him with her heart, because he is the only one who "loved" her and showed her care.
This is my song for when I remember my past mistakes... I fell in love with the wrong person. But everyone can understand it differently. I think that's the beauty of music.

"DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THAT MOTHER? BROKE HER DAUGHTERS LEGS IN TWO AND SAID "ITS TO DANGEROUS OUT THERE TO WALK SO, I HAD TO SAVE YOU." " BREAKS ME EVERY TIME.
