I sat next to Dave on a flight from Seattle to LA once. It was my first time flying alone, I was probably 12 or 13, and I was very nervous. At this point I had no clue who the Foo Fighters or Nirvana were, so I literally had no clue who he was. He could tell I was super uneasy, so he talked to me and was super reassuring, asking me my name and introducing himself, just generally being a really friendly guy. He talked about how he played music, but never mentioned the bands, and never really played up how famous he was. He helped me get my carryon out of the luggage compartment and told me to have a fun time as I was going to disneyland with my uncle who lived in irvine, and that was it. I saw a couple people ask him for a picture when we got off the plane, but I never realized who he was until a year or so later when I mentioned a "Dave" who played music and took some pictures with people to some friends who asked me if it was him, and it just blew my mind. Really, really genuine guy, and an experience I'll never forget.

Itā€™s funny how we can take a song and it can mean something so different in our lives. The first time I heard this was on the hour long drive to Torontoā€™s Sick Kids Hospital, after 3.5 years our daughter was having her final chemo. ā€œCould anything ever be this good againā€ ā€¦ hubby and I smiled while our daughter and our son (10 months younger than our girl) sang the Do do do's in the backseat. It was our victory song! That same little girl is a beautiful and brilliant 31 year old who's getting married in October (to a drummer šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‚), we'll have a family dance to ā€œour songā€¦ Everlong šŸ˜Š thanks Dave ā¤ļø!

ā€œI donā€™t know anything about guitar, Iā€™m not a trained musician, I canā€™t read music, I donā€™t know what these chords areā€ proceeds to write one of the most iconic songs of all time. Rock on Dave.

Wow! I gotta admit guys, I never thought my comment would get this kind of response. Iā€™m just happy to know everybody is such a fan. Hereā€™s to many more years of Foo!

Dave Grohl is probably the most sincere and authentic rock star around. My Hero.

I really appreciate how Dave speaks about the process of writing a song.

Went to a mental institution for like a month when I was 15. Iā€™d spend all my time in the main room hovering over the little radio they had. I wouldnā€™t let anyone change the station 103.9. Iā€™d wait each day for em to play this beautiful song and Iā€™d feel way better than all the meds they ever gave me ever did. This was right when it came out. And the acoustic version is the best!

ā€œIm not a trained musicianā€ says the legend who played drums and lead/guitar for two of the most influential bands of the 90s and 00s. Dave kills it

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head, she sang
Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head, she sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head, I sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Itā€™s bonkers to me that heā€™s this incredible and successful musician and yet doesnā€™t know what chords are which. Itā€™s pretty damn inspiring, really.

As a self trained guitarist the chords are: sounds good, sounds good, and sounds good.

The acoustic version gave us chills hearing it on the stern show way back then we included it in my daughter's funeral, because at this tone it really felt like a sad but beautiful description of our brief trip here together in the physical ā¤we were planning to take her to see Dave that same year but she didn't stay long enough. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful song with the world
