Prices: I used to work at a theater. It costs the theater roughly $1million(usd), or more, to rent the film reels. The theater then does not get any ticket profit for the first week, (sometimes the second if it's expected to be a blockbuster) and then 1/4 to 1/2 from ticket sales the next week. Typically the theater gets 90% or so of ticket sales only after about 4 weeks, and if the movie isn't doing well, notice they don't keep it for longer than 2 or 3 weeks. What the movie production company doesn't get, concession sales. So food and drinks are highly inflated prices on really cheap foods. So, if a lot of people see a movie in the first 2 weeks, then the theater tends to keep it around for a bit to get some profit on it, but if it is bad, they get rid of it as soon as they are contractually allowed and will sometimes put in another showing of a different movie to try to make up the loss. That's why they really don't want outside food and drinks, because a lot of the time, those sales are the only money they are actually getting for a good amount of time. I'm not sure how the new digital delivery works, but probably still have to pay upfront for the access as if it was a physical reel.

I’m a New Yorker and I found it really cool that you went to the exact movie theater that I went to during my high school days! (AMC Kips Bay) Also I think you should know that tickets used to be only $5 every Tuesday back in those days. That theater is way nicer than the touristy AMC or Regal locations near Times Square.

Perhaps one of the reasons for the proverbial "pat down," is to prevent (or at least reduce the incidence of) some people trying to sneak in betle nut with lime/similar products.
Those red stains are impossible to clean and there are quite a few people who spit indiscriminately in public spaces and who also rub the excess lime on the seats/walls/floors.

You can smuggle chocolate into American cinemas by replacing your gun magazine with a Snickers
