The Shantaram TV show wasn't filmed in India! So I went to Mumbai to show you the actual locations from Gregory David Robert's book Shantaram. How are you enjoying the Shantaram TV show?

If you've read the book, you're also going to notice that the location names in the TV show have been changed. The locations in the book are real places where the author Gregory David Roberts spent time. I highly recommend you read the Shantaram novel if you enjoyed the TV show.

"The original intention was to shoot Shantaram in its settings of Australia and India. In late 2019, the production moved to Bhopal, which was to be used for scenes set in Mumbai. Here they made use of areas that had changed little since the 1980s, including the famous Chowk Bazar, and also constructed a set to depict the shantytown where Lin Ford first settled in the city. The arrival of Covid suspended filming in February 2020, but even before this, the production was plagued with difficulties, with Hunnam particularly badly affected:

“Filming in India, I really learnt what it means to be fighting for your life for about five weeks,” he told Foxtel News. “I got a bacterial stomach thing and a significant lung infection and conjunctivitis in both eyes. Then I got an ear infection, then I got strep throat, then I got bitten by a mosquito and got dengue fever. I’m just glad that I pulled through.”" from "Where was Shantaram filmed?" by CN Traveller www.cntraveller.com/article/where-was-shantaram-fi….

Gregory David Roberts explains "How Much of the Book is Real?" on his channel    • Shantaram Question - How Much of the ...  .

If you want to visit the actual locations, see blog.karlrock.com/the-real-locations-of-shantaram/.

I read the book about 10 years ago and loved it. It gave me such an appreciation of India and the overarching theme of redemption pulls me in to the story.

My wife and I went overland to India in 1973/74 from the UK, by hitchhiking then buses and trains from Istanbul through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the all over India and Nepal. The book does a fantastic job at describing the sites and particularly the Indian people. Bombay Madras and Calcutta were very rough places in those days but we were always able to squeak out of any iffy situations. Shantaram is certainly one of our favourite books and the series was interesting, too bad it was cancelled. We went back to India for several months in 2010, big changes. Great memories thanks to Shantaram and videos like this. Thank you!

I also found Shantaram totally absorbing. It is particularly interesting for a westerner who has personal ties to India because so many of the impressions he felt, about the magic of India I know and feel too. I haven't watched the Apple TV version - I generally find film and TV adaptations disappointing. I can't imagine that they have captured the true spirit of India if it wasn't filmed there. Glad that you shared your thoughts on the book Karl!🙏🕉

I read Shantaram 14 years ago during my first trip to India. The book was one of those Indian bootlegs, that luckily had all the pages, given to me by an Indian guy I met in Manali with absolute insistence that I must read the book.

Thank you for making this video Karl. I’ve never been to India but I’ve read Shantaram and The Mountain Shadow at least 5 times each so it’s fascinating to see the actual places. Hope to visit one day soon.

I backpacked in Mumbai in 2007. Stayed at Colaba for a week. Loved the vibe. Keema Pao at Olympia, Kebabs at Bade Miyan, Beer at Gokul, Beef Bhuna at Baghdadi. Best part of my India trip.

Thank you for doing this video! I have been listening to the (43 hour) audiobook over the past few weeks (I have about 9 hours left) and it is fascinating to see the actual area and places! I’m holding off on the show until I finish the book.

The first two episodes were filmed in India in late 2019/early 2020, as you mention in the description. There were problems with the script/showrunner, so they shut down in February 2020, then Covid happened. Over a year later they picked up again, in Thailand like you mentioned. The first season covers 1/3 of the book, so hopefully as they continue they'll be able to shoot in India again.
