I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.

Mazzy Star was responsible for the early 90ā€™s sleeper hit Fade Into You. Featuring David Roback, who wrote most of the bandā€™s music, he was a talented multi-instrumentalist. He was joined by singer Hope Sandoval who wrote most of the bandā€™s lyrics, the breathy vocalist with a haunting yet hopeful voice.

Their hit track was released on the bandā€™s 1993 sophomore album ā€œSo Tonight That I Might See.ā€ There was something pure about the bandā€™s sound and their recording process. In a 2020 interview with Refinery 29, Sandoval said:

"I like to hang out in restaurants and cafƩs, eavesdrop on people's conversations and collect new stories. Then I go home and spend the evenings embellishing them."

Part of the bandā€™s magic came from the soulmate-like connection between Roback and Sandoval. In a 2018 interview with Double J, Sandoval said that and i quote:
"Half the time we donā€™t even really need to speak to each other, we use telepathy." The pair was rumored to briefly be a couple around the time of recording their debut album, ā€œShe Hangs Brightly.ā€

The song Fade Into You became an anthem for lovelorn teenagers in the 90ā€™s & Hollywood loved it too. The song was licensed to more than 30 movies and television shows & had artists like Ben Harper, Kelly Clarkson and Dinosaur Jr have all covered the song.

But before Roback became a musician he found himself in New York in the late 70ā€™s wanting to become a painter telling the LA Times in 1990 ā€œI went to New York mainly to be part of the art scene,ā€ā€œBut I gradually found myself getting more inspired by what was happening in music than in art. . . . People like Patti Smith and Television. I felt like a punk. That's the attitude I Iidentifid with, but when I picked up the guitar and started playing it, the music didnā€™t come out sounding punk. It was something else. . . ..ā€ After brief stint in new york he would head back to Los Angeles.

Roback and Sandoval both started off in other bands before coming together to start Mazzy Star.

Roback went to UC Berkeley and started his band with his brother Steven called Unconscious with Susanna Hoffs, who would later be known for co-founding The Bangles. The two brothers started their next band, Rain Parade, in 1982, and they gained popularity in the L.A. indie scene.

The soft spoken Sandoval came from East LA where her parents worked in factory and she was the youngest of ten children. She would form the group Going Home while she was still in high school with frien d Sylvia Gomez in the early 80ā€™s. Both women were big fans of Rain Parade, & they decided to make a bold move to get on their radar.

After a 1983 Rain Parade concert, Gomez snuck backstage to give David Roback a demo tape. At the time, Roback was under contract with Rough Trade records and Going Home was still unsigned, but doing gigs around LA. Upon hearing the demo, Roback offered to produce Going Homeā€™s first album and play guitar on the record, but even to this day it has yet to be released.. It was also around this time that Rob

What happened to Mazzy Star is what happened to the music business. Executives demanded control of the music. I'm glad Mazzy Star resisted even though it cost them the spotlight. If all musicians had Mazzy Star's view, executives would lose control of the music, and popular music would be incredible again.

No one ever mentions 'Into Dust' when talking about this great band. I think it's their greatest song - and one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

The death of Dave Roback from cancer is indeed tragic, but Mazzy Starā€™s story as a band is far from a tragic one. They made the kind of music they wanted to make and on their terms. What a gorgeous catalog of songsā€¦

That part about Hope going to cafes and coffee shops and eavesdropping on conversations makes me SO nostalgic for the 90's. Before smart phones and social media (and the EARLY days of internet) when being alone with your thoughts sparked so much more brain activity and creativity that a whole generation of people will never experience.

As a Metalhead if you don't like Mazzy Star we can't hang out. Her voice is pure gold. Love her music.

It wasnā€™t just her voice, it was her. His guitar playing was unique, especially for the period. It sounded like throwback, Cropper fused with blues, country and soul. It was a magical song, sometimes everything just falls in place like that. It kind of reminds me of a female version of Chris Isaaks Wicked Game.

Mazzy Star seemed to be a band of quiet introverts making ethereal, thoughtful, delicate music which made industry executives think they were pushovers they could boss around. However, as an introvert who's often been overlooked, misinterpreted, misunderstood and underestimated myself I can tell you that underneath the seemingly soft exterior often lies an independent streak fiercer and more powerful than any loudmouth would ever guess. Mazzy Star was going to make music their way or not at all and were willing and able to walk away when that was threatened to be compromised.

With Mazzy Star, melancholy never felt so warm and comforting. Itā€™s like they expand the empty gaping hole in my heart, fill it with some warmth, then empty it again. I used to sit alone in my collage dorm room and play ā€œinto dustā€ for hours to myself on the guitar. I was a sports jock on the outside, but a sad emo within.

Mazzy Star sung me to sleep through some of the hardest, scariest times of my life. Iā€™ve never been so personally touched by any band before. Probably saved my life at a couple points.. Edit: Iā€™m in a much better place now. Thank you. šŸ˜Š

Hope is so beautiful. I always loved that she was quiet and shy. Mazzy Star had so many more good songs besides Fade Into You. It is still one of my favorite records to listen to on a rainy day.

My heart broke when David Roback passed away. Even though they seemingly never dated, Hope and David were soulmates. Their music spoke to each other.

She is still one of the music industry's hidden secrets to most of the masses. My god, have you ever heard the track she did with Massive Attack, "The Spoils"? She has the most amazing, ethereal voice, and I suspect she is still in demand as a studio vocalist. Other artists and bands just love her similarly to how they loved Sinead. It seems strange that no label released a killer solo album that would've made her a household name, but maybe she likes it better being the magical ingredient in great records rather than a huge solo star on her own.(Smart woman!)

"I wanna hold the hand inside you"...still one of the most powerful lines of "desire" I have ever heard in a song.

I've always liked "Five String Serenade". 1993 was such a great year for music. This is one of the bands that made it special.

When they said they wasn't trying to write a a hit song , that's the beauty of it. The song has an effortless sound. Very pure.xx
