“I got a couple songs people like to talk about/And I should be happy.” This is honesty of a caliber only a truly fearless artist like Lauren Spencer Smith could gut out. Success is only relative after all, and musicians of all levels can relate to being unfulfilled by accolades, buzz, and streaming numbers. The recent “Sad Forever,” which she performed in the Vevo studios this past fall, is a self-reckoning for our DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 alum. This time last year, the Canadian singer who claimed to mostly write “songs about boys for your enjoyment” was in our studio recording live performances of “Fingers Crossed” and “Flowers” - two songs about boys. In July, ‘Mirror’ dropped. That debut album contained “Fantasy,” her smash collaboration with Em Beihold and GAYLE. So now LSS is suffering from a post-debut album comedown. She herself would probably admit those opening lines are a bit reductive. After all, eight million monthly Spotify listeners and a huge tour this summer are incredible achievements. LSS also knows how to have a little fun. That recent studio appointment was wise in its vision. We now get to celebrate the holidays with the singer delivering a cute spin on Eartha Kitt's 1953 stocking stuffer, "Santa Baby." Put it on your holiday playlist.
