Cancellation isn't just some famous millionaire getting banned from social media platforms - the most common cancellation is your average guy getting fired and ostracized from society for daring to say the wrong thing once.

To answer Mark’s question about “why deplatform”…you deplatform the messenger of an idea when you can’t deplatform the idea itself.

Cancellation works in guiding the public conversation but increasingly leads to people disengaging in that conversation and therefore becoming entrenched in their own views.

Always love Mark’s candid takes. His wording and perspective and seeing him come to realizations is so encouraging and fun.

Don't we already have a word for this: "Hypocrisy"?

Ever hear the word hypocrisy or hypocrites? It's almost more powerful than luxury beliefs.

Postmodernism says social media is the battleground and words are the weapons. The "hierarchy of disagreement" has name calling as the lowest (and most common) form of disagreement. "Ad hominem" attacks the writer without addressing the argument.

Every time someone gets banned & i find out about them, I start listening to them. I've found so really good stuff like that!

Dixie Chicks were successfully cancelled. The irony is, they got cancelled for criticizing George W. Bush, and the people that cancelled them now say they hate Bush. But no apologies to the Chicks, of course. 😂

There is a big difference in the lengths the establishment went to over the Tates and Alex Jones. They took away banking from them. They just told Shane you can't do SNL right now. Not really the same tactics being used.

I don't think enough is said about the way this is tied to status games, and how intrinsic it is to social dynamics. Even primates engage in what is more broadly classed as "tyrany of the cousins". Whereby acting "too big for your boots" is counteracted by co-ordinated negative pushback. Cancellation is just a more evolved form that has greater reach due to a combination of the internet and the increased polarisation of modern society.

Of course they are going to lose attention on censored platforms, but did they check how much attention are they getting on other platforms, such as their own website or rumble? I don't think that deplatforming works.

We are overlooking the fact that not all interactions with an influencer are equal; many of the people that interact with an influencer just stumble across them randomly and these were not persuadables and actually didn't like the content in the first place. When they cancel an influencer, the people that were actually motivated to follow the influencer will follow them to another platform. I'm sure some of them will fall off but more than likely if they desire that content they're going to follow it. The study doesn't measure what it can't detect.
