One of my absolute favourite Joni songs, and to hear it in this stripped down demo is really wonderful. I'm hoping Joni will continue to release sets like her recent one featuring all sorts of unreleased demos and broadcasts from her early career. I would love to hear more demos and stuff from the 70's, probably my most favourite era in terms of Joni's music. Such sensational, breathtaking works to be had.

much as I love the album version I wonder if the whole Hissing album had been done in this stripped down acoustic style it might have been even better... this stuff is so amazingly intimate and melancholy. the demo of Edith + the kingpin is similarly haunting

Hearing the stripped down version made me realize something super obvious it only took me 20 years to really hone in on: the recurring theme of fishing and getting caught as a way of talking about materialism and appearances and their traps and inauthenticity, covering their real selves and emotion with stuff and business. Jonah in a ticking whale, schools of taxi fishes, fishnet windows of Bloomingdale's where he watches the high fashion girls with credit card eyes, shining hair and shining skin, shining as she reeled him in... But while he seems to remain oblivious of how he is trapped, she is not, she is struggling to get out of the net. Always loved this song and its segue into Centerpiece.
