I work at a major tech store. And this drives me crazy, because I know the differences between these. And like you say the consumers don't care as long as it works and says 3.0 or is BLUE. Even though many new laptops still come with at least 1 USB 2.0, and 1or2 3.0 ports BUT they've stopped coloring 3.0 ports blue for some godforsaken reason, and don't even identify them.
But it's the WORST when I get a customer that knows what cord they need, high powered and data USB 3+ or type c, and I take forever to find it because they only put 3orC on the package, and I have to go to the manufacturer website to find the correct specs. THEN my manager just hands them the cheapest cord and tells them "Sure, it'll work with anything!" Because that's what we're all led to believe... Then it doesn't work good enough and they return it %50 of the time or live with a lower speed C cable without even knowing there's a difference between every damn cable...
