A year or two before he died I travelled from London to Paris to watch him. I arrived at the club in the afternoon while they were sound checking. They let me in, and had the amazing privilege to watch Art up close. The mind-blowing power, combined with amazing swing was awesome...a treasured memory!

I bumped into a young worker in a music shop today, he was in the drums section. I asked him who his favourite drummer is, he said Art Blakey. So good to hear that people in their early 20's understand this groundbreaking drummer.

I was very fortunate to see him play in Rochester, NY. He hosted a drum workshop. It changed my life, and I am always in awe of his playing.

Those Pressed tolls were among his many incredible signatures. Of all the qualities I appreciate his Mentorship qualities the most. He started the Messengers with legendary Pianist Hirace Silver. I grew up in NYC in the 60s and 70s. My Father, also born and raised in New York grew uo with Bebop and Art was amongst his Favorite drummers and musicians. Many of my favorite Musicians have gone through his band. I'd see him several times a year either in clubs like the Vanguard or Jazzmobile . It was at the latter where he really connected wuth his audience. A free Concert series in tge summer created to entertain and bring music to everyone. He'd talk about the beauty and greatness of the Music, it's culture and need to be continued. He was a proud Man, serious and with a sense of humor.

Got to know Mr. Blakey when I was in my teens, a few years before he passed. He had his problems, to be sure, some of which weren't widely known, but he couldn't have been kinder or more generous to me. Really miss him. Thanks so much, Brandon, for such doing such a wonderful job paying tribute to the man and his, well, art.

it's good when Drumeo does these "genius of" videos for older music...I couldn't hear the bass drum at all from those recordings, but with modern recording and video quality, these bad old recordings come to life!!!

What sticks with me about this great presentation was Art’s passion and honesty in presenting his music on the bandstand. His do or die stance and how he communicated with his band members.

Man I was lucky to see so many of his contemporaries and compatriots who still toured the south in the early eighties, and so many new torch-bearers who were influenced by his groove...he was such an innovative jazz engine, My fav albums of his includes, 'Unstoppable', that's what he was. Never another like him

A Great Gentleman, Mentor and Band Leader. He gave the younger generation of Jazz musicians an incredible platform to hone their skills and be heard worldwide. Buhaina sculpted World Class Jazz Musicians and presented them with a Great opportunity. We used to hang with him in New York and he would always welcome, educate, and encourage us...Art Blakey "Grand Master".

Thank you Drumeo and Brandon for the hard work you put into this video! Art is very historic and even just a few of these licks you broke down would help anyone wanting to improve their Jazz chops.

It’s easy to miss especially in this modern era but art Blakey’s drumming is all about dynamics and energy. The power actually comes from his use of dynamics. Thanks for the video I saw a couple albums I don’t have?
