Small Town Festival Etiquette (Amanda did great!)
1. The lack of card acceptance is less generational/country, and more cost. Small town biz often have very lean profit margins.
2. You get what you get & you dont throw a fit. They'd love to have all the options too, but small towns dont get as many product vatieties & flavors as cities
3. Be positive and appreciative of what's being offered. Be open to the possibility of real human connection. There will be small talk, it's ok that be awkward
4. People stay or move to small towns for millions of reasons. Almost every town needs a herd of college educated teachers, government workers, medical staff, etc. Please don't assume that small towns folks are dumb or reactionary. But dont assume anyone is smart or open minded either, humans are humans.

To answer why people where dressed like Fallout Characters! The Mothman Museum is actually a location in Fallout 76 and the game creators actually came and toured the museum and asked them for permission for the location to be in the game. In exchange the museum is allowed to sell Fallout merch. At least thatās what a worker in the museum store told me when I visited a year ago.

The last Fallout game takes place in West Virginia. Point Pleasant, Mothman, Mothman cultists, and even a annual Mothman week long event is all in the game. Mothman is popular in the Fallout community. You would be surprised at how much they added local cryptids and creatures from folklore into the game. Keep up the amazing work!

Another reason why the festival might be free could be simply because the local area isnāt wealthy enough to invest in payment processing infrastructure. Itās easier and cheaper for them to just deal with cash once people arrive most of the time. West Virginia in general, and especially rural small towns, arenāt well funded.

Hi Amanda, I am actually technically a theology student (I focus more on the social scientific study of religion, but I am getting my masters at a divinity school). You are correct that there is a statistically significant correlation between certain religious identities and the belief in conspiracy theories like Bigfoot. I cannot go into great detail as this comprises a significant portion of my thesis project that is not finished nor published, but your suspicions are certainly correct.

just thought id comment on the beans thing, a few years ago someone left a can of beans at the statue, after it was removed another one appeared, as you can assume hijinks insued as increasingly large amounts of canned beans were left as offerings to the mothman, as far as i can tell it was just a case of someone doing something silly and it became a meme

I'm local to the area and it was so overwhelmingly packed and crowded the first day that we just ultimately left without doing much. Point Pleasant definitely isn't able to keep up with the demand that Mothman has generated online over the last few years. They definitely need to revamp how the event is structured.

I was there! I kept an eye out but never saw you. My biggest complaint was that there wasn't really anything to do once you looked at the booths. I genuinely didn't even know the speakers were there. I would've loved a Mothman costume contest on the music stage. There couldn't been categories for kids, pets, homemade, professional, etc. That would've been so fun. I also think there should've been shuttles to the nearby hotels. I stayed right across the river in Gallipolis, and my hotel was chock full of moth people. We could've filled a few shuttles and reduced traffic/parking issues.

From reddit, about the beans:
"Its fallout 76 related. Beans are the consumable food in Appalachia region and theres a fictional cult following in the future year of 2077 within the game who worship Mothman as the divine being in their high power sect beliefs. So they offer beans, their only consistent food and life supporting nutritional source within the Appalachian region in the game, as a sacrifice to their sect of belief's regarding Mothman as their divine high power. God. What a rabbit hole. š¤¦āā but glad I could figure it out in a few clips within the fandom library app."

Slightly disappointed Amanda didn't mention how caked up the Mothman statue is because I find that incredibly hilarious
