I never saw the prince as an evil character in The Little Mermaid. He simply loved another and wasnât aware of the mermaidâs situation until the very end. Itâs a cautionary tale, that even if you sacrifice everything for someone, it wonât inherently mean that theyâll love you back. In the end, even the mermaid saw that. She doesnât kill the prince with the enchanted dagger when she gets the chance, because she realises that heâs innocent and that it would be wrong to end his life for her own benefit. Itâs a tragic story.

TRIGGER WARNING!!!
The tittle gets even more sad when you think about this. I read somewhere mermaids are related to r@pe victims, having a tail instead of legs so they arent opened against their will again, their song atracting the ships being their ask for help trying to attract their safety and justice.

POV: Icy saltwater churns against my face as my flowing tears fall to join the sea. My tail cuts through the waves in powerful strokes and I desperately fight against the raging current, my seashell studded dagger pressed to my chest.
Not long ago, I had dreams of a beautiful future, a life with my lover under the stars. Today, that changed forever.
He was a sailor, with cerulean eyes that shone even brighter than the moon. Those eyes were filled with amazement and wonder the day we met, taking me in as he locked my gaze. He had anchored his ship with a sudden force that sent sea spray lapping against the rocks upon which I was siting. Fear had surged through me as he stepped off, and my fingers froze, halfway through braiding pearls in my hair. I had never met anyone like him before, anyone brave enough to approach a siren. My whole life I had been taught to weave enchanting stories through song, to lure men into quiet madness before they could reveal the hidden truths of our world. It was the only way to remain safe, unthreatened. But something about him was different, strangely comforting. So I never sang, and we just sat there, talking as we watched the sunset.
I trusted him with my life, my love, and everything I had. He betrayed me.
He sought to exploit us, expose us. He spun tales about mermaids to wealthy merchants, promising business in the healing powers of our blood and lockets made from our scales. Now we are hunted, no longer an old legend. And I have to be the one to set things right. I will sing until my voice breaks and my lips bleed raw. I will fight to protect my family. I will put my blade through his heart. Never again will I trust.

POV: you're sat on a rock in the ocean looking over a beach that sits below a large village.Â
You watch children play in the sand and run from the approaching waves, just like you'd always longed to do. You longingly look down to your sparkling tail as the waves trickle over it. A feeling of guilt washes over you for dreaming of leaving the sea but your desire to run and feel the sand and grass under feet outweighs the guilt. You know you can never approach the land people and feel the dry sand, your people have before but were treated like monsters, strung up and showcased in a cage for the rest of their lives. So you were stuck to merely dreaming of land.
You carried on gazing at the playing children, while humming one of your peoples beautiful melodies as the sun began to set when suddenly you hear a gasp from behind you. You turn and see a young man sat within a small rowing boat staring directly at you. Going against your instincts to swim away you don't move and continue to gaze into his eyes, just as he does to you, he doesn't scream or try to leave.
You hear him whisper to himself "I must be dreaming", you tilt your head and reply "You and me both".
The waves calmly hit the side of his boat as you begin to speak to each other and you stay for what seems like hours. As the stars begin to light up the night sky he tells you he has to return home, and begins to row to shore, but as he leaves he shouts to you with a smile on his face "Please come back, so I know I'm not dreaming" you smile and nod before diving into the deep blue water, a feeling of warmth you've never felt before spreading throughout your body.
You return to the rock the next day and he is already waiting for you, but this time in the water. You talk and laugh all day, learning about the world you're forbidden to explore, just as he does yours. His words sweet like honey and his touch as gentle as the waves deeply entrance you.
You meet at your spot almost everyday for months, you know you're in love with him and he with you. He brings you so much joy and happiness, you can't bare to be apart for too long. However, with your love comes bitterness, you know you can't be with him, he cannot survive in your world and you're a monster in his.
You have spoken of your future once and he's assured you he doesn't care about your differences and that he will always love you more than anything, but you know one day this wont be enough.
As winter approaches and seas become stormy you continue to meet your forbidden love. Despite the dangers he refuses to go a day without being with you.
One especially stormy day his boat capsized, you fought your way through the current to him but he was unconscious with blood coming from his head. You didn't know what to do, the love of your life was dying in your arms.
You swam to the shore and got him onto the sand and screamed as loud as you could for what felt like a lifetime. Soon villagers came down and found your love lying on the sand. From behind a rock you watched as he was taken into the safety and warmth of the houses, you prayed he would survive. But you knew then, your love couldn't continue.
Days went by before you saw him again. He was rowing to your meeting place but you weren't to be seen, you were hidden under the waves. You watched as he waited. As time went on you could see the pain in his eyes, it tore you apart, you wanted nothing more than to go to him, but you knew your love couldn't protect him from the dangers in your world.
He returned everyday for weeks and you never showed yourself to him, even when he screamed and cried out for you. Soon he stopped coming. You had broken your heart to save his.
You returned to your shared place occasionally over the next few years, to remember your love and the joy you shared, but, despite your dreams he was never there.
Many years later on your annual return to your much loved rock and village beach, there was a familiar boat with a familiar face sat within it. From a distance you watched as the familiar person turned in your direction. It was him. Your love. Except he wasn't alone. A young girl sat upon his lap.
You listened as he told the girl stories of a beautiful mermaid who roamed the waters singing enchanting melodies, stories of you.
It warmed your heart to see the happiness in his eyes as he thought of you. The pair remained for a while but as they were leaving you sang aloud the song you had sung the day you met. Suddenly he turned and you locked eyes almost instantly. Without saying a word he knew then why you had left him. You had given him up so he could have a life, you had given your life for his.Â
A tear fell down your cheek and into the water as all your pent up emotions were released. You knew you had done the right thing letting him go. You both smiled at each other and you saw the sun hit a tear falling from his eye.
You slowly submerged yourself back under the ocean and watched from a distance as he rowed back to shore with his child. They climbed out of the boat and ran across the sand, as he reached the village he turned and waved towards the ocean, towards you. You felt a wave of relief wash over you knowing he had lived his life.Â
Your love for each other had never disappeared, he was still the man you had met all those years ago. He was still the love of your life, its just you were no longer his..
if u made it to the end, u deserve a medalâ¤ď¸ thank u

when I was a child I used to talk to the waves and I had an imaginary friend, who was a mermaid. I would visit her every family holiday - it didnât matter where, because I knew she would always be there to meet me. This video just helped me heal from a hard year and made me reconnect with my inner child. Thank you Selena

pov;
âI promiseâ she swore. âI promise by all the gods, I will love you forever and a day.â
The young girl was transfixed. Here was the loveliest creature sheâd ever seen. And the most peculiar. The milkiest skin folding into the sharpest of scales. Plumpest lips uttering the wildest oaths.
âBut tell me, what are you?â
âOh but does it matter my dear? Does anything matter at all other than love? The aching of my heart and the cries of my soul all for you?â
Their lips met and the waves crashed. The thrum of their spirits deafening. The girlâs body erupted in flames.
She reaches for her lover and they swayed in the moonlight. They danced and twirled till the sky turned liquid. Till her lungs filled with pain and her smile went wry. Till her skin turned blue and her world turned black.
The oceans screamed for her.
A single broken sob pierces the uproar and the world drowns in quiet. Time stops and ears split.
âI am so sorry.â
The mermaids rejoice with their friend exclaiming their content. Their jeers of joy go unheard.
âWhere did she go?â
âOh who bloody cares?â
âProbably swimming in pride. I know I'd be.â
The sea carries the corpse landward. The young girl is not found till dawn. Her body oddly warm and her hair braided with weed. Her state most strange. She looks loved and in love. A smile so small you could miss it pressing against her lips.
When the men arrived they vow they saw a woman weeping by her side. A broken little thing that ran at their sight.
The horizon mourned her for millennia. The tides broke in sorrow. Day after day after day till an old nymph washed ashore. Her scales gone dull and her skin pale. Her wrinkly, pained face spoke of a beautiful youth. The same quiet smile pressed against her lips.
Together at long last.

that picture and the quote right below it remind me of a book called "ondine". it narrates a love story between an ondine and a knight. ondines are the author's version of mermaids: they lack fish tails but have the same connections to the ocean as mermaids and sirens. the book's drawings are incredibly beautiful and detailed as well. i seriously recommend it!
