Pekiti Tirsia Kali Instructor Logan Lo breaks down the famous pen kali scene between Matt Damon and Nicky Naudé.

What makes this scene memorable among kali martial arts practitioner is:

1) Matt Damon specifically trained in the Filipino Martial Art Kali for the movie. Krav Maga is widely mistaken as being used in this film. It is not, as Matt Damon was trained by Kali/Jeet Kune Do expert Jeff Imada. The film's uncredited fight coordinators are Damon Caro and Jonathan Eusebio. Both are trained in Kali and Jeet Kune Do and neither are trained in the Krav Maga.

Here are the time-codes of each fight breakdown:

I think it is worth noting that Bourne didn’t want to kill his assailant because he hadn’t regained his memory and was desperate for any information the attacker could potentially provide. That could be a plausible explanation for his choice of targets with the pen.

I personally feel push daggers are very underrated when it comes to a back up or last resort tool. Especially a well made one. If there's no chance of creating distance for yourself, it's the way to go with a such a concealed piece. Love the break down by the way.

I gotta say Jeff Imada's fight choreography in the Bourne movies was awesome to watch.

Do the bathroom fight scene from mission impossible fallout, it’s got clear action and camera work compared to the shaky cam in the bourne franchise

I love that this fight scene got drastically different grades from an MMA/BJJ perspective versus a Pekiti-Tirsia Kali perspective. To be honest though, I'm more used to the weapon work of a fight scene being worse than the grappling/hand-to-hand stuff. Good to see the Jason Bourne team at least got the improvised weapon aspect right. I've trained in improvised weapons for some time now, so it was nice to see that Kali takes a similar approach. Since a pen isn't really a traditional weapon, the mind has to be extra strong not to go too far with it, so I wonder how much Matt Damon had to train in order to NOT actually stab his scene partner with it.

I love this kind of analysis. Bruce Lee said there were techniques and movements good for movies, realistic fights are difficult to observe for the untrained eye, that's why many techniques look "convincing" but not realistic or strategically correct, like the hand stab. The longer and flashy the fight, the better for the producers. Great video as always.

This scene was one of my favorites in the trilogy and I remember going to the theatre multiple times almost for this fight alone. Super cool breakdown! I'm glad I stumbled across this channel.

This isn't one particular scene, but maybe an interesting project for you guys would be the collective fights in the film Brawl In Cellblock 99. Both of you are very informative and entertaining and I look forward to whatever you put out, regardless of whether I've seen the film or not.

I love kali, people seem to think it's all weapons. It's not. Extremely useful, like riding a bike, after a while you find a rhythm and can do all kinds of stuff. Because you can see the lines. It's weird.
