I've watched so many guys react to this song and none of them seem to really get the weight of the girlhood line and why this song is such a sucker punch to girls that hits in a truly relatable experience of that loss of innocence and whatever regrets one might have surrounding it. The fact that you caught onto it well before that line shows up is why you're my favorite! Thank you so much for another great video, Knox!

I think âpromising grown manâ is really important in the song because sheâs exchanged âyoung manâ with âgrown manâ and then followed it with a line calling herself a child to emphasize both the difference in their age and life experiences, and also to suggest that his manipulation of her was an abuse of their unbalanced power dynamic. She wouldnât have said âpromising grown manâ if she hadnât intended to make us think of the way sexual predators are called âpromising young menâ and let off the hook. Relationships like this where one partner is significantly older and has much more life experience than the other, especially when that partner is a much-lauded celebrity and the the younger one is an ingenue, are unequal relationships. In this essay I will⌠(thank you all for coming to my TedTalk)

It adds another layer of brilliance when you realize that Taylor is singing about what happened when she was 19 and Mayer was 32, and she wrote and recorded this song when SHE was 32. As in, sheâs saying sheâs looking back at them when sheâs now the age he was then, and she still canât fathom why he did what he did.
She also made it track number 19 on the Midnights album.

Like so many others I didn't like Taylor Swift music for a long time. Then, I sat and listened to many of her songs, most of which weren't on the radio, and she's now one of my favourite writers!!! She's so good!!!
To all those who only judge Taylor Swift by her radio hits, I ask you look into her other songs!! They're fantastically written and so, so great!!
I can definitely say I'm a Swift fan now, for sure!!!

in one of the songs she famously wrote abt their relationship called 'dear john' one of the important lines is 'I SHOULD'VE known' and in the end it changes to 'YOU SHOULD'VE known' which symbolizes the way she realizes that what happend wasn't her fault and that what he did was wrong. since she never actually says 'should've' in this song other than the chorus it also ties the 2 songs together and it makes in more obvious that she has now completely realized that she wasn't at fault in the relationship since she was a teenager . Thought you mind find that interesting!

I was grinning by the halfway point of this reaction â your analysis and understanding is so ON POINT. you were completely on Taylor's level the whole time, picking up on everything she was putting down, pin-point predicting what would come next.
I've seen teenage girls react to this and immediately *get* it, even if a lot of the nuances escape them, because they've seen or lived the realities of the song. Meanwhile, many male reactors nod along and miss the point entirely, even if they can point out stuff like the wordplay better. You 100% got all of itâ it speaks both to your excellent musical comprehension and your empathy. Kudos!!

I genuinely love your breakdown of lyrics and how quick you are to spot patterns, doubles and deeper meaning.
One of the ones I really enjoy in this song is "stained glass windows" because, yes, the religious imagery, the fractured glass, but I also feel that this is certainly a double with the use of "stained", as in marked, perhaps permanently, and looking through glass windows that are stained impedes your vision, stops you from seeing clearly that which is in front of you, just as this relationship still colours the way she views life going forward.
