For me, everything changed when TK bought ROH. It was around that time when quality started to go down hill. Too many titles and wrestlers came into the picture leaving AEW bloated. AEW had a chance to fix this when they added collision but they keep featuring the same people, and it's very frustrating.

The absolute biggest problem that AEW has at the moment, is that the owner himself, just doesn't know when to put his head down and work to improve the product, and to turn off Twitter. If there is absolutely one thing that Tony Khan needs to take from the WWE, it's the fact that Triple H just gets on with it, and doesn't spend way too long on Twitter, having arguments with people.

For >1 year, AEW has been sitting on the hottest angle in wrestling since Montreal 1997 (i.e. Punk vs Elite) and has seemingly refused to do anything with it. Regardless of the reason, it makes Tony look like an incompetent booker and the Elite look petty and jealous.
Punk isn't perfect, but he's made a lot of workers in AEW look really good (Eddie, Darby, MJF, and Ricky immediately come to mind).
If you want to ask "why is AEW struggling so much?" you can start there.

Tony shifted the focus of the company from a variety show where you could follow several ongoing storylines that had something for everyone to overexposing the acts Tony likes the most at the cost of everything else. The injuries hurt but not letting the next man or woman up to take a bigger role has also hurt.

as you said aew was going to change and it can continue to change. WWE, Impact, ROH, GCW, aren't always perfect. We can't get mad at one side and compliment the other (toni storm) who is giving full range. Theres gonna be peaks and valleys and hopefully from response they will change things. The sad truth is injuries just mean they have to do something because all promotions need viewership.

I think the shift began really when Cody Rhodes left and CM Punk’s first drama which only got worst with the second drama that took placed. First Cody has embarrassed AEW cause you see WWE making him a main event talent. Next they made waves when they brought in CM Punk and it was working for them he was their world champion then they had the drama with him and the elite and he hurt his leg and was out with a long injury. He then came back and what do they do they put him on the C show just as he was getting his footing again then the Perry drama happened and he’s fired. This was their biggest draw and Tony blew it. AEW doesn’t protect their aging talents either. Bryan Danielson has a messed up arm, Jon Moxley nearly got a broken neck against Fenix, Alex Reyonds was literally knocked out in a match and they were dragging his body around the mat which could been very dangerous for his health. AEW I believe needs new leadership. Tony Khan be a silent owner, hire someone to be your GM and i don’t mean a storyline on tv role I mean put someone in charge. Tony has shown he can’t do it.

I absolutely fell in love with AEW at the start of its inception, but you could see train really start to derail after Cody left. I personally gave up on it around the time of the media scrum last year and while I follow tabs on it, I get the sense that it has gotten worse rather than improved and is gradually losing its identity. For now, I'll stick with WWE & NJPW

The first 2 years of AEW were just amazing exciting matches, debuts and moments: Moxley vs Omega, Young Bucks vs Lucha Bros, Hangman vs Danielson, Cody’s TNT Championship open challenges. CM Punk returning to wrestling after 7 years, Adam Cole debuting, Bryan Danielson return as the American Dragon, Hangman and Kenny story, Punk and MJF story. Now we have Ric Flair most likely gonna have a match and almost die, Paul Wight teaming with Jericho and Omega when he can barely walk and Tony Khan having announcements every 2 weeks that he hypes up so much and then it just be something he can tweet about on twitter

The hiring Flair thing was mostly a shock because until now AEW has been really good about not working with sex pests, like when they got rid of that british goth dude that wore the gas mask thing to the ring (forget his name, and don't care to google it) - Hell, Tony Kahn even was ripping on McMahon's allegations during his twitter rants recently... To then turn around and sign Flair feels like AEW turning it's back on it's previously stated values.
