I'm delighted that Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the Oscar, she deserved every accolade for her turn as Mary. Dominic Sessa gave such a strong performance, that you'd be surprised to learn that it's his first major screen project. Finally, Paul Giamatti was also excellent as the gruff teacher Paul, and despite losing the Oscar to Cillian Murphy, gave one of the more memorable performances of his career so far.

I really enjoyed this film, it gave me "Breakfast Club Meets Dead Poets Society" vibes. It's a great story of how three lonely people with seemingly nothing in common band together to create an unconventional family of their own. It really makes you wonder what became of the characters afterwards.

This film was so charming. I'll admit, as a black woman, I didn't acknowledge Da'vine's Mary Oscar winning role as exceptional because I didn't feel like she was acting. And then it hit me, that's great acting. Idk if it makes sense but I felt like I knew her and it wasn't a performance, that is a great actor. I can't wait to see what she does next.

I love the character depth given to Mary, especially as a black woman she wasnāt the comedy, or savior despite being the only ālikeableā character. We got to see her grieve, but with care by the other characters. We got to see her complexity and different sides. She wasnāt a tragic character she was a person who experienced life. Sheās relatable to all. Her Oscar was well deserved. Loved her not being a trope too. It felt good seeing a complex black woman character.

Actually, they are not looking for a connection, they are forced into it by circumstances beyond their control. Not the same thing. And one thing I find this analysis lacking is that school management is against Paul, because he gives the rich pupils the low grades they deserve and not the high grades they covet to access the best universities.

After reading the comparisons between the exerpts from the scripts from āFriscoā and āThe Holdoversā, I do think thereās somewhat of a case to be made for plagerism because a lot of the similarities are too close for comfort. That being said, I also think that the plagerism controversy kind of undermines what makes The Holdovers work so well. It isnāt that the story or character archetypes and the journeys they go through are the most groundbreaking, original thing ever and more about what Payne and Hemingson did with them. Thereās a realness, an earnestness to these characters that makes them feel genuine and authentic, and the world feels lived and real. I think the performances by Sessa, Randolph and Giamati go a hell of a long way in grounding these characters in reality. Those elements combine to take what couldāve easily been a cliche, emotionally manipulative story and elevate it to something truly special

The character of Mary was SO well handled and treated with such care, humanity and love. She so easily could have been a stock or token sassy black character weāve seen in millions of comedies but the script, the direction and of course the acting made her feel like a genuine human being. No white saviorism or āmagical-negroeā stereotypes. Just three lonely people who make each other less lonely during the holidays.
