The Holdovers, Alexander Payneā€™s Oscar-nominated indie hit starring Paul Giamatti and Daā€™Vine Joy Randolph, was a bit of a surprise success. Set in 1970, the film feels very of that era on a deep level ā€“ in aesthetics but more importantly in its being totally unafraid of sincere sentimentality. The film is a deeply empathetic exploration of the damage that can come from feeling abandoned and how fighting through the fear and reaching out for connection can change your life, even when you thought that would never be possible. So letā€™s take a deeper look at The Holdoverā€™s heartfelt messages about not getting trapped by your past, found families, and learning to imagine a brighter future for yourself even in the midst of great darkness. (Weā€™ll also unpack the whole plagiarism scandal.) Letā€™s dive in!

The character of Mary was SO well handled and treated with such care, humanity and love. She so easily could have been a stock or token sassy black character weā€™ve seen in millions of comedies but the script, the direction and of course the acting made her feel like a genuine human being. No white saviorism or ā€œmagical-negroeā€ stereotypes. Just three lonely people who make each other less lonely during the holidays.

I'm delighted that Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the Oscar, she deserved every accolade for her turn as Mary. Dominic Sessa gave such a strong performance, that you'd be surprised to learn that it's his first major screen project. Finally, Paul Giamatti was also excellent as the gruff teacher Paul, and despite losing the Oscar to Cillian Murphy, gave one of the more memorable performances of his career so far.

I love the fact that Paul doesn't get together with Mary. It shows a rare maturity. They have a healthy friendship and Paul has matured to handle his own self discovery outside of that school.

I really enjoyed this film, it gave me "Breakfast Club Meets Dead Poets Society" vibes. It's a great story of how three lonely people with seemingly nothing in common band together to create an unconventional family of their own. It really makes you wonder what became of the characters afterwards.

This was my favorite movie of 2023, I really love these slower more relationship based movies. When they have a good script and good characters, they tend to be some of my favorites. So glad Daā€™Vine Joy Randolph got all that recognition for her amazing performance!

This film was so charming. I'll admit, as a black woman, I didn't acknowledge Da'vine's Mary Oscar winning role as exceptional because I didn't feel like she was acting. And then it hit me, that's great acting. Idk if it makes sense but I felt like I knew her and it wasn't a performance, that is a great actor. I can't wait to see what she does next.

I love the character depth given to Mary, especially as a black woman she wasnā€™t the comedy, or savior despite being the only ā€œlikeableā€ character. We got to see her grieve, but with care by the other characters. We got to see her complexity and different sides. She wasnā€™t a tragic character she was a person who experienced life. Sheā€™s relatable to all. Her Oscar was well deserved. Loved her not being a trope too. It felt good seeing a complex black woman character.

Actually, they are not looking for a connection, they are forced into it by circumstances beyond their control. Not the same thing. And one thing I find this analysis lacking is that school management is against Paul, because he gives the rich pupils the low grades they deserve and not the high grades they covet to access the best universities.

There's something about forming a relationship with just as troubled strangers as you are, creating a family dynamic and deep bond with them, during Christmastime in an isolated place, that I find very appealing about this film.

Great film, I especially like the idea of the past not dictating the future, everybody is writing their own story, which reflects on the book one of the characters plans to write, the New Year celebration, and the whiteness of snow.

This was such a beautiful film, so well acted by the three (canā€™t believe it was Dominicā€™s first role). Iā€™ll take 100 of these types of films over the super hero/action movies. So much heart & soul.

I loved Sideways and the four main characters and his denial of telling the truth, which he of course did. So many movies end in characters driving away or walking away. I loved the way it ended in a hopeful door knocking ā¤ļø

After reading the comparisons between the exerpts from the scripts from ā€œFriscoā€ and ā€œThe Holdoversā€, I do think thereā€™s somewhat of a case to be made for plagerism because a lot of the similarities are too close for comfort. That being said, I also think that the plagerism controversy kind of undermines what makes The Holdovers work so well. It isnā€™t that the story or character archetypes and the journeys they go through are the most groundbreaking, original thing ever and more about what Payne and Hemingson did with them. Thereā€™s a realness, an earnestness to these characters that makes them feel genuine and authentic, and the world feels lived and real. I think the performances by Sessa, Randolph and Giamati go a hell of a long way in grounding these characters in reality. Those elements combine to take what couldā€™ve easily been a cliche, emotionally manipulative story and elevate it to something truly special
