Community's Annie: How She Beat The Smart Girl Curse

Community’s Annie Edison seems like the archetypal Smart Girl: she’s super intelligent, laser focused on her goals, and can get a little intense... But Annie is particularly interesting because she shows us a side of the Smart Girl that we don’t see as often on screen: her life after she hits rock bottom. So she actually provides a great showcase of how the Smart Girl can break free from the more negative aspects of life that come along with the trope and learn to use their skills (and intensity) for good – both for themselves and others. So let’s unpack Annie’s life as a Smart Girl, how she managed to come out the other side of her breakdown even stronger, and how her entire journey helped her grow as a person!

Next, check out one of our videos on some of our other favorite Smart Girl characters like Gilmore Girl's Paris Geller ( https://youtu.be/le2IWahezk8 ) and Modern Family's Alex Dunphy ( https://youtu.be/6OEOxlaOdSo )!

It impresses me how Alison Brie played Annie and Trudy Campbell from "Mad Men" at the same time, despite being two radically different characters. Annie has always been my favourite character, since in school, I was basically a nerdy over achiever.

The casting director for Community better have gotten a massive raise after helping put this cast together. Alison does an incredible job doing the smart girl thing while also giving Annie more depth than just that stereotype.

I think Alison gives one of the all-time great comedy performances as Annie. She has easily the broadest range of roles to perform across the series and she switches between them with absolute aplomb. She moves between smart/naive/cute/sexy/endearing/annoying/secure/insecure and a dozen other things without ever missing a beat or compromising the core the character. One of my favourite actors of all time. ❤

I was an Anne and attended Community college my first year. The smaller less competitiveness does create a better environment.

All of the Community characters are deconstructions of stock sitcom archetypes. Annie is the typical nerdy Tracy Flick like achiever whose dedication to her school makes her bitter, causing her to develop an Adderall addiction. I love that Annie picks herself up from her setbacks, and emerges stronger than ever, with the study group being her true family.

Annie was the most relatable character to me on Community. I hope the movie closes her story off strong.

SIX SEASONS AND NOW A MOVIE!! Thanks on this take (pun intended) on Annie Edison, love her so much because her journey all throughout seasons 1-5 are so real because we can see her grow and relapse at times but because she found her people she found her true passions and was able to relive her past regrets growing up. Also side note hope you guys do also takes on each of the shows' pairings too esp Annie and Abed because she pretty much was the best next thing for Abed during Troy's voyage

All characters in the Greendale Seven (plus the Dean and Chang) deserve a take of their own ❤ The writing of character arcs on this show was really great. I identify with Annie the most since I was the typical bookish smart girl at school, but mellowed out through college and into adulthood. I loved watching her in the show

I can imagine what it was like to surf the web to try put a Annie compilation that wasn't connected to Community's most insane moments; that show is bonkers lol

She is a smart girl with modesty. She is not getting scholarships to MIT or Harvard. She is dealing with problems most people deal with in community college. Going to community college made her a lot less sheltered and more practical than most TV smart people.
