We learned about this in school during the 1900's section. Absolutely terrifying. Being the age that so many of the women were back then really puts it into perspective.

I had never heard of this, those two men who created the ladder across the roofs were legends! As well as the ladies that made sure this didn't happen again, bravo!

This case has always sounded like deliberate murder. We need answers. We need the truth, because those facts could speak to other truths about the callousness and ruthlessness of corporate hierarchies, even in modern day standards.

Very interesting watch, I wasn’t aware of this tragedy. We must never forget the struggle our predecessors went through to secure workers right and must continue the fight whenever we see our rights diminished.

THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT was a play we put on in my college about this case. It recounted numerous testimonies to reenact what had happened that day, talking about the protests leading up to it and thereafter. Terrible tragedy.

All the lessons learned from this fire were thrown away with the changes to NYC building code in 1968, allowing 9/11 to be far worse then it had to be.

I don't know if this event is still taught in schools, but it needs to be. An absolutely essential chapter of labor history. We can not trust bosses to serve any master but profit motive, and they will absolutely throw workers' rights out the window, as evidenced by what we now see from Am*zon. Workers' unions are absolutely essential. Edit: I'm scrolling down the comments and it appears that most people did learn about this in school.

Ashes of Roses by M.J Auch is an amazing book depicting the strike and fire from the perspectives of three young women. If you’re interested, it’s a really good read and covers more in depth of these tragic events.

So strange, I was just randomly thinking about this tragedy a few days ago. I never heard about this until I learned about it in U.S. History class in high school years ago. It was one of the few lessons in class that I was intrigued about.

This tragedy has intrigued me for years, living so close to NYC and having an interest in those bits of history we rarely learn in school. I am personally thrilled to know the identity of the final six has been made, 100 years after the fact. Thank you for the excellent episode and all the work that went into it.

The Behind the Bastards podcast did an episode about this if anyone wants to learn more about it. They talk about the owners and how the building was built and marketed as "fireproof" and about how dangerous it was to work in the clothing/fabric industry in general.

15:20 it's things like this and like the worth done with the tomb of the unknown soldier that proves that humans truly care about one another. There's no reason to keep searching for these peoples' identities a century later. Their parents certainly aren't around, no one will get anything from it, but these people even one hundred years later simply feel it is necessary to know so these people can be put to test properly. I can't think of a more selfless cause in historical and genealogical sciences than the work done to identify victims of a century old fire.

Years ago I owned a book about disasters. Besides this event I learned of the Cocoanut Grove Fire, the 1945 Empire State Building B-25 crash, the 1919 Great Molasses Flood, the Johnstown Flood, 2 planes colliding over NYC in 1960 & more. If we forgot our past we're bound to repeat the mistakes in our future.
