In the late 1970s, a discovery unlike any other was made by a volunteer working in the Ohio State University Radio Observatory. This discovery remains the strongest possible evidence of life beyond Earth, even today. In this episode of Haunting History James Troup explores the history behind the mysterious Wow! Signal, possible theories surrounding it and other space oddities.

I could see you narrating for a documentary on the discovery channel, you’ve got the voice for it

Somehow, the fact that the signal was never heard again suggests to me a one-time or "accidental" occurrence, whether terrestrial or extra-. Two possibilities, in particular, come to my mind in the case of an alien origin: 1) If OUR equipment didn't glitch, someone else's did: "they" did not mean to send us this signal (which could therefore be gibberish), but it happened anyway. 2) It could be the radio trace of some kind of disaster or cataclysm, a natural event with radio properties not observed before. It would be a little less of ET's "phone home," and a little more of Obi-Wan's "I fear something terrible has happened."

We have way too much golf courses. Not enough observatories.

I remember there was some phenomenon like FRBs but they eventually figured out that whatever it is they were detecting was happening at exactly the same time employees used the microwave. I forget what they were called

I’ve never heard that ghosts in the attic analogy, but it’s perfect… this is one of those stories you hear about on YouTube but only ever shotgunned with like 9-10 other “interesting tidbits” in an algorithm optimized 10 min clip.

All these people "WhErEs ShAnE aNd RyAn?!" Stop. They have their own channel now, doing their own thing. And I very much enjoy the new narrators they have for some of these videos. This man has a very soothing and pleasant voice :)

Always find this topic entertaining to listen to, seeing I live with in driving distance of the observatory.

It sure is wild they didn't use backup systems to detect hardware malfunctions. Then again we probably wouldn't be talking about this for decades if they had,.

What's being narrated is equally important as how it's being narrated. The voice, the context, the final product 👌🏼

Whenever you are around someone who is being toxic and bringing everyone down you can call them a magnatar or whatever he said sucking away at people's lives until they disappear

I'm just wondering why we are still unsure about aliens... statically we are not alone in the universe. It's kind of scary but true.
