There's something very on-the-nose about not smiling to avoid getting wrinkles. It's like a metaphor for being so worried about growing old that you let life pass you by.

I’ll never get over aging being seen as a negative, as though it’s not a privilege to live and grow old. Some people don’t get that chance.

Aging is a privilege, absolutely. I have a chronic illness, and I wasn't supposed to live until 30. I hit 31 last year and I am very grateful. I WANT to get older. I want to grow wrinkled and grey with my partner. It is probably something that won't happen...which is sad. But I embrace aging. So much.

my mom is 45 and constantly talks about how she can’t wait for her long, curly hair to go gray/white so she can look like a witch and i think that’s cool as fuck

The "wow, you look so young for 34" thing probably also comes from every teenage character on TV being played by a 35 year old for so long. People who are 19 get called baby faces for looking 19. We simply have no concept of what age actually looks like

Canadian Indigenous person here, our elders are incredibly valued to us, and I see aging as such a wonderful thing. I love my moms crow feet around her eyes, I love my dads forehead lines, and I have the beginnings of smile lines all around my face. I love them because it means I’m happy and still here

You’re not old until your cardiologist isn’t surprised to see you. I was like 27 when I first saw mine and the first words out of his mouth were “holy shit a young person”

Y’all repeat after me: I am not here to only be attractive. Aging is a gift. There is no one better to be than myself.

as someone who's struggled with suicidal thoughts before, i love that "aging is a privilege" mentality. like yeah, i've fought tooth and nail, clawed my way back from the edge to get to the age i am now. why should i be ashamed to display how i've succeeded?

When I was nine a friend my age died tragically. Every milestone I reach, including signs of aging, I think about her. Aging really is a privilege because the only way to stay eternally young is to die young. Let me wrinkle-- I'm aging for two!

a big part of the fear of aging is just the fact that it’s part of American society. a lot of other cultures and societies value their elderly and they’re not seen as useless and ugly, they’re genuinely respected and valued and seen as beautiful

This is a bit of a personal story, but I wanted to share. I've lived with my grandma for most of my life. She raised me. She has worked hard her whole life, pulling her family up from poverty to solidly middle class. She's so strong and is a huge role model for me. A couple of years ago, we we're putting makeup on next to each other, something we often do to bond. She looked over her face, across the lines and spots, and sighed. "I wish I could afford to get this fixed." I was a little surprised. She was rarely so vulnerable, and was normally much more confident. I was quiet for a few moments. Honestly, I didn't know how to respond. After a while though, I said "Can you remind me how old your mother was when she passed?" She gave me a confused look. "She was 56. Why?" "Well," I said, "You just turned 79. Think about all the medical and quality-of-care advancements that have happened to allow you to get here. And that's not to mention your own effort. Aging should be a medal of honor. And I think you look beautiful, anyway." She actually started tearing up when I said this. She thanked me... and, mostly joking, said she'd still like to get work done 😅 She just turned 81 last month, and she's still beautiful. I hope I can be like her when I'm 81!

That woman who trained her facial muscles to not work is actually scary. Her face looks unreal

I need the anti-aging community to stop worrying about looking human, and focus on stopping the real horrors of aging; my knees popping like firecrackers as I do simple things. I'm not even that old and I exercise why they gotta do that

Heard an employee talking about the “anti-aging benefits” of some lotion in Sephora the other day. Turned my head and she was talking to a TWELVE year old girl. About how this lotion prevents wrinkles.

My friend is 23 and is already talking about Botox. I asked why and she said because she wants to. I asked as tactfully as I could if she wanted to solely because she just liked the idea or if it was rooted in fear of aging/being unattractive to men. She said it was the latter but that “that’s just how it is, if you want to be loved you have to stay sexy”. And I cannot express how deeply chilling that was to hear.
