Aristotle's school of philosophy the Lyceum was the greatest educational institution the world had ever seen when he founded it in 334 BC. After spending 20 years working in Plato's Academy, Aristotle left Athens when the master died, travelling the Greek islands carrying out his scientific studies before being summoned to his Macedonian homeland where he became the teacher of the mythical Alexander the Great.

We can see it on your face that you are enjoying your time in Athens, I'm glad that you are delighted with your visit. Throughout the course of the next year I will be visiting Greece too, can't wait to experience this myself. Great content as always, enjoyed every minute of it!

I study philosophy, and I wish we could have a teacher who walks us around through the campus garden... It would be so AMAZING if we could have teaching lessions outside the class room...and just walk and learn🥲

When I visited Greece with my family we were on a schedule and, even though we briefly tried to find the Academy and Lyceum, we ditched the effort and headed into the Teygetos mountains of the Peloponnese and a few days in a revamped hunting lodge / cabin rental resort thingy. We drove the southern edges of the peninsula, and bought some capers from a shirtless old man just north of Kalamata. Lots of death boxes along the mountain roads (instead of guard rails ;). Diogenes says Aristotle died in Chalcis, at his mother's place. Is there another source saying Macedonia?

Hey you're still in Greece! It's very weird hearing the English pronunciation for all these Greek words. Greek is very different to most other languages, we actually have no relatives - languages of the same family. Great video summary on Aristotle! How did you end up in Greece btw? We're not a popular destination (apart from summer vacations I'd assume).

It's interesting to me that Plato, with his highly authoritarian "philosopher-king" political system was, on a personal level, so tolerant with Aristotle who he allowed to attend the Academy for 20 years even though Aristotle disagreed with so much of his philosophy and if I remember correctly, thought that democracy was the superior political system. Any thoughts on that?
