Fresh Foodstuffs used to be a technology under the Economic Wing of the House of Wisdom for the Abbasid Dynasty. However, in the Season 4 update, it received a nerf and moved to the Town Center - so is it still worth researching it? Let's find out!

Edit: As some of you have pointed out, there is a small mistake that doesn't include the 50 food cost of the villager into account. Since I do subtract the additional villager gather rate from the payback time, the payback resources for FF should've been 125 gold only, or 175 resources but with the villager gathered resources starting at -50. Either way, it should've been included. Thankfully, this oversight doesn't change the recommendation, as the -50 food is paid back by the villager so quickly. The payback time on 1TC is still way too long, so you should pick it up at 2TCs. Cheers! :) Quick question for you folks: Do you find the new Biome scenes more difficult on the eyes when watching the video? I will use other biomes for the next videos for sure, but wanted to get a pulse on whether I should include the Enchanted Grove at all moving forward, so do let me know. Thanks for stopping by! :)

I think another point to mention is that having a discount is better than buffing gather rate, since resources are limited on the map. As abbasid, it is common to branch out and take berries or hunts. One advantage of researching fresh foodstuffs is that it can delay the farm transition and keep the limited amount of natural food resources to produce military and keep the momentum.

This change is a real headscratcher for sure. On the one had the lost vil time and reduced benefit is kinda painful taken all at once. On the other hand, its still just objectively really good when you have multiple TCs without being locked to one wing so now you can swap into a boom at any time. One thing is that the combo with fertile crescent and even this reduced fresh foodstuffs feels actually a bit stronger than the pre patch change - its slower at first but sooo much safer. Methinks a further change to let it complement 1 TC play might be in the future; for instance cut the price reduction down to 25% and add a 10% vill production speed boost. That way it pays off vill time too after about 10 vills but as a tradeoff has decreases synergy with multi TC strats.

Very interesting! I assumed that moving Fresh Foodstuffs to the TC was to free up the Abbasid from going eco wing every single game to get access to it. I didn't realise that it taking the spot of a villager in your production queue was actually a nerf, so thanks for that insight

I think a thing shouldn't be forgot: you don't need a economy wing for that upgrade if you get attacked early and can't boom, the military wing would be better, but you still can get discount villager

You have to take into account the other villager that you produce will cost 50 food and a farm for you to have a similar resource output. If you do put it on a farm that's 125 resources you're spending - so you don't have to get back 175 resources - only 50. "10 to 14 min payback time" gets reduced to 3.3 to 4.3 minutes :)

Would love to see at which point the Agriculture technology from their house of wisdom is worth it. Ar 75w and 200g it's cheap in late castle/early imp, but before that is it really good?

Everybody seems to always forget that you safe 50 food because you don't build a villager. The upgrade only sets you back 125 resources not 175

but as an abbasid you prioritise food and wood over gold in early-to-mid game so you can read this upgrade as "villagers always gather some food regardless of resource" if that makes any sense

Still worth it at 1TC imo, let me exaplain: You are overlooking the fact that villager GATHER resources and DEPLETE them. While fresh foodstuffs SAVES resources and depletes nothing. What does that mean? A villager in 5-6 minutes will deplete a forage bush, which means you will have to move out to gather different berry bushes or transition to farms. THIS HAS A SIGNIFICANT COST of travel time, investment, and risk. Fresh foodstuffs is actually a brilliant tech that should be picked with 1TC because it does not increase depletion rate of resources and simply saves resources. All other eco techs increase depletion rate. I would still consider "Wheelbarrow" to be a priority, but the number play you have shown in the video does not convey the full picture and effect of the tech. That being said I appreciate your mathematical overview, in this case its just missing a variable.

Does going culture wing and getting preservation of knowledge (20% discount on all tech) possibly change the recommendation of the video?

Good calculations but you forgot that AOE 4 is not purely economic strategy, you and your opponent will try to harrass your eco, you both will lose your villagers. But in Abbassid case (if they have this villager discount upgrade) villagers lost will be not so painfull like for other nations especcially for maps where you have less opportunities to set solid resourse income, so this upgrade is even better than Chinees -33% to timebuild for vills.

So if we are going 2TC or 3TC, should we get Fresh Foodstuffs ASAP, or deliberately wait until we are ready to capitalize on it (e.g. the TCs are about to be finished.)

Did you subtract the cost of the villager not produced from the payback period? The tech costs 175 res which is an EXTRA 125g and not +175 res considering the villager costs 50f. Should be between 7 and 10 mins pbp according to your table. With 2 TCs this is definitely worth it as it would have the pbp drops to 3.5-5 mins. What about golden age pbp? Is it worth to do a straight up golden age in dark age?

1 thing i wanna say is that you're not perpetually behind 1 villager. you're behind 1 villager until your opponent has reached their desired villager number (eg 120) and you cought up with him. if it takes 10 minutes between picking up fresh foodstuffs and reaching 120 villagers and a villager collects 40 recources per minute then you'll have lost 400 recources.
