I love these stories of Black History. It gets lost as time goes on. I remember learning of the “Yellow Fever” when I was younger but sure don’t remember the heroisms of the Black community that risked their lives and own money to take care of white folk…. I’ll be sure to pass this along to my grandchildren and theirs! Thank you. 😊

Yellow fever is spread by a species of mosquito common to areas of Africa and South America. Vaccination is recommended before traveling to certain areas. Mild cases cause fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Serious cases may cause fatal heart, liver, and kidney conditions. No specific treatment for the disease exists. Efforts focus on managing symptoms and limiting complications.

amazing to think like i live in Philly and go to old city a lot, and yet this is the epicenter hundreds of years ago, and now its just simple parks with beautiful trees and vibrant life. its hard to imagine this happened in this city I grew up in.

There is some belief that the use of vinegar and smoke might’ve helped because it repelled mosquitoes to a degree

I remember reading a chapter book about this in middle school called Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was pretty good from what I remember

Damn the story at 12:08 hits. I didn’t think we would get so much detail.

I can’t remember how old I was, but I read the historical fiction book Fever 1793 and it sparked my interest in this part of history. So dark when we didn’t know about all the ways to help, so many lives lost!
