Rob Zombie's The Munsters (2022) Review - Monster Madness

It’s time to get into the spirit of Halloween and Monster Madness or “Munster” Madness today. Every October, I like to do something a little different. This time I’ll be checking out some NEW horror and monster movies. And by NEW I mean, they just came out! This is exciting for me, because it gives me an excuse to watch brand new stuff, instead of always just going into my familiar rolodex, digging into classic horror and things from the past. Which I enjoy and will continue to do, but today’s pick is equally nostalgic as its a reboot of the classic 60s show by Rob Zombie, The Munsters!

One thing in any Munsters reboot that will always be hard to capture, is the chemistry between Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne. They had worked together before and knew how to play off each other. They are an unsung comedy team. I think it's possible to do again, but the original show was lightning in a bottle.

James might be the only person I've seen that says anything positive about this interpretation of Herman Munster.

I loved the ending montage when Herman, Lilly and Grandpa drove the Munster Coach full speed into a police barricade, guns blazing, to the dulcet tones of "Freebird". That was awesome.

This is the kindest review from a real fan, someone who wants to find something to like about it, but you can tell it's far from what the fans of the show would have asked for.

Fun Fact: Rob Zombie's debut film was almost a proposed The Crow sequel called The Crow: 2037 but as we know that fell apart and his debut was instead House of 1,000 Corpses

I would love to see James Rolfe and Rob Zombie in the same room just talking about old horror stuff together, and spouting back and forth trivia.

Every Rob Zombie movie has the same plot and that plot is "Hey look at how hot my wife is!".

As GWAR said: "Whatever happened to Eddie Munster?!?!?!"

Every review of this film I have watched have all used the same word "Different", and in that way, everyone isn't wrong. I had my 70 year-old mother watch the film, and ironically, she described it as "watching 60s Batman", so the movie does succeed in having viberant colors (another thing every review online seems to agree with).

The one show that can never be redone. Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis with DeCarlo were a combo burned into history

I didn't want it to end, because it was finally starting to feel like the TV show, at the end. I hope there is a second one, that focuses on the whole family.

October comes and goes quick every year. I feel like I get done watching Monster Madness and then a year flies by.

Love the idea for this years Monster Madness. Just hearing James talk about movies is fun in of itself. It was also fun to hear such an honest review of the film. I would have guessed that this kind of wacky humor would be to James' taste, but it's commendable that he can see past that and view the films flaws as well.

This film can be reviewed in six simple words: "It's a hate crime to cinema." Grandpa was the only character that was cast properly, the others... "not so much" is the kindest thing I can say.

I’m honestly surprised you’ve never done a Monster Madness called Munster Madness and just review a bunch of episodes of the show during the month

There was also the 2012 movie called "Mockingbird Lane" which was technically The Munsters as the character names were the same about The Munster family moving into 1313 Mockingbird Lane. The movie starred Jerry O'Connell as Herman, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. Despite the pilot getting really high reviews, it was immediately canceled after the pilot aired. The movie was going for a modern darker and edgier horror/comedy

Maybe I missed it when you were listing reboots, but I think you forgot The Munsters Today from '87-'91? Was I just not paying attention? It's the one where Lee Meriwether hung-up her catsuit and played Lilly. You're doing a fine jod, James. Thank you for still being around and creating content after all these years!

Mixing Rob Zombie with The Munsters is like combining Ghostbusters with NES video games. Sure it might sound like the ultimate dragon ball fusion of greatness but instead ends up with a whimper.
