Obviously not because of AI but because of overcrowded markets that make indie games harder and harder to promote.

I think that what separates a good Game Developer (or a developer in general) from AI and from other developers is the creativity and imagination. Sure you can ask the AI to generate code and ideas for you but at the end of the day you still have to filter through all of those and know how to ask the right questions. There are so many aspects that go into games. Personally I see AI as an assistant that allows me to automate the boring stuff (or the stuff that is less interesting to me) which in turn saves a ton of time and effort. As of now we still have to break up the problem into smaller sections and know how and what to ask. All in all I am fairly optimistic about it

To be honest, ChatGPTs code does not scare me. The results can only be as good as the training data and AI requires a lot of training data. It can help build fragments. Just like tutorials show fragments, the asset store sells fragments. But combining that into the whole picture is another story.

A lot of people don't realise that it's not really ChatGPT itself that we're scared of. It's what comes after it considering the exponential progress of AI.

I feel like AI will only help small indie studios. It is not going to replace all the skills you need, but it will speed up the process of conceptualizing.

I've recently used AI to help me sharp my Game Design Document, and I was really happy with the results, reduced my work like in 1 day entirely. I think we need to use AI as a tool to be more productive, and at the same time the self critical eye will always be better when it comes to deliver a good product.

Funny, I think it's going to be the opposite. Here's my views on that : - AI is a tool. It's not going to make your whole game. Sure, it's going to speed up writing scenario, game design, programming and art. But it's not yet capable to replace all of that. - The market is already saturated with bad indie games. Making indie games will be easier so sure, there will be more bad games. But you don't really compete with the random games you can find on Steam. - Making a game still requires a lot of different skills. An AI can't just replace a 3D artist, you still need to know what retopology is for instance. AI can help you make a marketing strategy but it cannot take videos of your game, etc. Honestly, I see AI as a great personal assistant. It doesn't do your job but it helps you do it faster. Which is why I think it's actually a great time to start being a gamedev. It has never been easier. And at the same time, experienced gamedevs will raise above a sea of mediocrity. To me it's juste going to be Indiepocalypse 2 : Electric Boogaloo

I'm a traditional artist singer-songwriter musician writer all of those creative things. I have looked at what AI produces and I am not impressed at all. The closer you look at what AI produces the uglier it gets. I feel very secure in my ability to produce far superior sound effects music art textures stories everything AI is doing. It's not artificial intelligence it is electronic extrapolation. All it can do is draw upon things that other creative minds have already done and then squash them together into something morbid and postmodern. Maybe you can get some neat ideas but it's always going to take a true innovator to use what AI creates a garbage copy of for the purpose of making something useful.

I've been saying this for the last four years: We will be seeing a lot of solo developers making a name for themselves in gaming; the same way we know books by the author we will know games by the author as well. In fact Thomas is an example of this, and so is Jonathan Blow (Braid), Dean Dodrill (Dust), Markus Persson (Minecraft), Lucas Pope (Papers, Please) or Eric Barone (Stardew Valley) , among many others. I don't think AI will kill jobs, it will transform them.

I found you years ago by playing Pinstripe and I loved every second of it. Now, in no small part because of that exposure to indie gaming as an art form, I am now a qualified Digital Designer and am currently working on my animation and generalism portfolios. What you're talking about is super close to home here. I've been using chatGPT to practice scripting, and I've managed to add some cool features to my blender installation. I like where it's all headed, but it's moving too fast xD

I'm a bit stand-off-ish about anything AI, but you make some fair points about staying human and using the tools. Where my games are, I keep things simple, mostly 2D, and pixelated, so I'm not really worried. I make games because I enjoy the process and I know I created everything. It's rewarding in its own way

One of the most important factor that Thomas shared with us is at 7:52 which is 'to remain human'. A lot of the times, our players can tell or will feel it when the game is coming directly from our own creations, thoughts and feelings, that's one of the things we want as indie devs! 2023 is going to be a difficult year for us but lets go!! :D

I'm a Gameplay Programmer. I am basically using ChatGPT to get unstuck whenever a difficult new challenge appears. For me it's about listening to someone's Advice. Now everytime I would normally Google, I copy & paste the same 'Google Question" into the ChatGPT text Input and I open my Mind to listen to any Advice. A d then I couple my own Human knowledge with the A.I.'s advice if it sound reasonable.

I'm doing this! At the end of 2022 I was playing with ChatGPT, and expanded upon some game ideas I had. Including one for a pkmn like game, and the responses I got made it to where I couldn't ignore it. I then looked for examples of ppl making pkmn games in various engines. Particularly Godot, although I found others too, and then I started developing the game. I am a generalist, so it makes me really happy hearing someone talk about it. I literally create content around being Multidisciplinary on my channel. To the point though I grew up working on sprites, revamping and editing especially, and as well as making region maps for game worlds. (The town map in pkmn for example). Not so much overworld, but I can learn quickly. Which is what I am doing watching your channel among others. Probably going to use Tiled then import it into my game engine when I decide which to go with. OH I almost forgot, I used AI to generate creature design concepts, and while most aren't game ready of course. Some are shockingly close, but I am going to hire an artist to go over each one to make it all one cohesive style. Using AI to speed up the process, but still using Human ingenuity. The perfect combination.

I'm an AI engineer by day and a game dev by night. I completely agree with your outlook on AI. 1. I think it's great that AI provides rapid prototyping and market testing. Being able to poll an audience for feedback on scenes and levels would be difficult and time consuming for solo developers who might not be artists. 2. Mastery of both the traditional tools and new AI tools is going to give you the best edge. Speaking from experience, being an AI expert isn't enough. I believe you're much better off if you can build stuff from scratch rather than relying solely on AI tools. For now, AI is great for getting inspired and saving time, but you absolutely need core skills in art, music, storytelling, and programming to produce a quality game. Even in the AI industry, the human element is the most important one. 3. Being overshadowed is a big concern, but that's always been present in this industry even before AI. I personally think it's great that one person could potentially create a timeless masterpiece all on their own. Even though the market might be filled with crappy to mediocre games, I think it gives high quality games an even bigger opportunity to stand out. That being said, practically, I'd probably want to pick up some marketing skills...

Ah, here we go again. I seriously think that ChatGPT taking people's jobs is overrated. Most of the time if you need something complex you need a person who is experienced in that field to tell it specifically what to do. NO it won't replace actual developers it will just become a productivity tool that everyone uses. Until it can create something flawlessly by taking input from a non-developer I wouldn't get too worried about it taking your job. Also considering how often you cannot even use it because it has exceeded maximum capacity, it's not like it's a reliable tool for everyday use.

I've been working a lot with these AI tools out of curiosity, including chatGpt and midjourney. One thing that I've noticed is that there is definitely going to be an inverse relationship between the sanitization/censorship of the tools and their usefulness. Very often you'll run into problems with censorship limits even when you're trying to make something entirely tame. If you're actually trying to create something that is "adult" in nature, (eg. a headless corpse or a nude dancer) it will either fail outright or give terrible results after lots of effort. So my advice, as funny as it sounds, to all creatives (game devs, artists, writers, musicians, etc) should be to push your content further into the realm of "parental advisory" themes. Because no matter how good these "AI" tools are getting, the companies in charge of them are going to refuse to allow it to create that content. In other words, maybe AI will create all the elements of Hollow Knight (now or eventually), but it will never make all the elements of Duke Nukem 3D because of censorship.

if everyone can make games, I think it's like what happened to photographers, suddenly much more people are doing it as a hobby or for fun, and it would be harder to generate revenue but of course, if you build an audience or build something unique, you might be able to make it work

Your experience generating code has been exactly like mine. At first it’s crap but then you keep getting more and more specific and it’s incredible how much better it gets after feeding it more and more prompts
