I never heard that the Marshallās original plan was that of āscorched earthā.
In fact, we have a diagram of his original battle plan, in which, a charge up the gut was held back, while cavalry were sent up the wings toward the two groups of archers to scatter them. And this was probably a good plan.
Funny thing is, everyone says that Henry advanced his lines 50 paces to goad the French into charging. But because the battlefield looked like an ā8ā, moving the line up 50 paces put him at the narrowest part of the ā8ā, which would have the obvious effect of cutting off an avenue for that flanking attack. There were sharpened steaks remember. So perhaps they decided to go up the gut at that point, because what else?
Anyways, there are lots of theories about why the French lost. And Iām sure they all have some weight. But overall, my opinion is that the English won because they were a force of professional soldiers who had done plenty of fighting together as a unit. The French were a conglomerate.
Iām from Canada, and I know from experience that in an international tournament, the time to beat Canada at the game of hockey is within the first two games. This is because the Canadian team is also a conglomerate of players that donāt usually play together. As the tournament moves on, game after game, you can watch the team gel tighter and tighter, until āhive mindā becomes more of a factor. At that point they are very hard to beat.
The English were very hard to beat because they possessed the quality of āhive mindā throughout their ranks.

I find it interesting that many of the battlefields of this campaign were again battlefield during WWII.
