Doch, indeed! While DOCH is much more flexible, INDEED captures the meaning. However, in English it is seldom used in conversation these days, except when things get dramatic and the user is expressing indignation. Or, a school teacher, for example, wanting to impress a student might say: "Indeed, you should know the answer!" Emphatic, unimpeachable and personal, INDEED, like DOCH, makes a point of making a point.

Passable American-English translations for "doch": 1. 'actually'; 2. 'simply' or 'possibly'; 3. 'actually'; 4. 'really'. 1. (a) "Doch, ich komme aus Deutschland" -> "No, actually, I do come from Germany". (b) "Oh, ich habe morgen doch Zeit" -> "Oh, I actually do have time tomorrow". 2. "Das kann doch nicht sein" -> "That simply can't be" or "That can't possibly be". 3. "Nein, ich habe doch Höhenangst" -> "No, I'm actually afraid of heights". 4. "Ah, komm doch mit" -> "No, really, come with us". "Ich habe Ihnen doch getsagt..." -> "But I told you..." or "Actually, I told you...". "Doch, Herr Sauer" -> "Actually, I did, Herr Sauer". "Hier is est doch" -> "And here it is in fact" or "And, actually, here it is" or "And HERE it is".
